1,772 Days

I spent 1,772 days wearing braces.  When I began this journey in March of 2011 I never thought it would be that long but somehow in the end, it was so, so worth it.  I feel so much more confident now that my smile is what I always wanted it to be.  Granted, it's still not perfect.  The right side of my smile still has a small gap, almost too small to even see in photographs.  You can see it in real life though.  I still have some cosmetic dental work that I'll have to have done to fill in that gap, which will not only improve my smile but also make my teeth healthier than they would be with a gap that could allow bacteria to cause gum disease.

In the end, if you're an adult thinking about taking the plunge of getting braces to achieve the look you've always wanted, or just want to improve your dental health, I would absolutely tell you to go for it.  The time will pass anyway and much faster than you think it will.  When you're done, I think you'll be happy you did it.  I know I certainly am.  Now if you'll kindly excuse me, I need to go eat an apple off the core, peanut M&Ms, sticky caramel, and some crunchy corn chips.  :-)

Makeup Vanity Makeover, Part 1

Welcome!  If you haven't already seen the video that accompanies this blog post, go ahead and check it out!  If you've come here from the video then you're in the right place to find photos, links, and more information than what I could fit into a seven minute video.  If you have any questions that aren't answered here, please feel free to ask!

My Perfumes:
Wonderstruck by Taylor Swift (large and small bottles)
Twentyone Black by Rue21
Guess Gold
Cherry Vanilla
Purr by Katy Perry (I love the kitty bottle!)

Because makeup can be a decoration, right?  Lippie decor!

How cute is this tissue box?  I actually find mine at my local Winn-Dixie grocery store and they are no more expensive than a boring box of tissues.

I purchased this adorable pink, white, and gold sign from Big Lots this summer.  I adore the fact that it even has little hearts on the sides!  And this phrase is something I think about often and even have on the background of my laptop right now.  You can find all sorts of different signs with this same phrase on Etsy.

This is another sign with a phrase I love.  This one is sadly not as cute but I think the message is important: it's what's on the inside that really matters.  You can find a cuter version on here on Etsy.

Manicure Monday: GLITTER!

Since I didn't have to work today, I had a lot more extra time and I just felt like playing with some nail polish.  I've really been enjoying playing with my glitter polishes lately and I like that if I don't want to wear the manicure for a long time (because the texture of glitter can annoy me), I can peel it right off when I use the Elmer's glue base coat.  That's what I did today!

After that glue base coat dried, I applied two coats of Milani's Red Sparkle.  Just like the Gold Glitz of this same brand that I used last week, this bottle was thick, goopy, and hard to work with.  But so much pretties!

After that, I applied a top coat of New York Color Grand Central Station but that glitter just soaked up top coat and was still gritty and rough so I added another coat.  After all those layers, this polish didn't even last through the day but I didn't really expect it to either.  I just enjoyed spending a few hours looking at the pretty glitter!  And the book nerd in me loved that the red glitter with specks of gold reminded me of Smaug's belly from The Hobbit.

Coral and Gold Mani

Another manicure!  I'm on a roll lately with painting my nails.  For this one, I started off with a coat of Sally Hansen Insta Dri base coat on the nails that got the coral polish and Elmer's glue base coat on my ring fingers.  After that dried, the ring fingers got a coat of Milani's One Coat Glitter polish in Gold Glitz and the others got two coats of Essie's Stones N Roses.  My bottle of Gold Glitz is so old and thick it was really hard to apply so I guess I should be on the look out for a new opaque gold glitter.  Suggestions are welcome!  I topped it all off with NYC's Grand Central Station.

Gold Glitz didn't hold up well at all.  It peeled off in less than twelve hours because the layers were so thick.  I redid it the next morning with a thinner layer and it held up a little better.  The Essie polish was a really pretty peachy coral but I found it a bit hard to work with and streaky.  I know lots of people love Essie's formula but I personally find it hard to work with.

I'm just really enjoying a glitter accent nail lately.  I know it's not for everyone but I just love a little silver or gold glitter with a mani.  What nail polish styles are you enjoying lately?

Face of the Day/Hair of the Day

You may recognize the photo above from an Instagram post I shared earlier today.  I ended up shooting a video after finishing all of my makeup and while taking pictures for my thumbnail, I snapped a few for a FOTD/HOTD post as well.  Here's what I wore.

Face:
* rimmel fix and perfect pro primer
* rimmel lasting finish foundation in light ivory
* benefit erase paste no. 1 fair
* nyc smooth skin loose powder in translucent
* wet n wild ultimate brow mascara in nothing but bru-nette
* jordana blush in blushing rose
* nyc smooth skin bronzing face powder in sunny
* wet n wild color icon bronzer in reserver your cabana
* elf makeup mist & set

Eyes:
* wet n wild fergie take on the day eyeshadow primer in for my primas
* sonia kashuk eye on neutral palette in matte 02
* nyx single eyeshadow in skinny dip
* smashbox limitless eyeliner in onyx (tightline)
* elf eye primer & liner sealer (sealer + matte black shadow to line top lashes)

Lips:
* Milani Color Statement Lipstick in Pretty Natural
* Carmex Lip Balm

And if you're wondering how I got this slightly wavy texture to my hair, it's actually really simple.  Last night when it was damp after showering, I added some volumizing mousse (So Gorgeous Root Mousse) at the roots and just a little bit of heat protectant (Beyond the Zone Turn Up the Heat) at the ends.  Then I blow dried my hair and separated it into two sections: left and right.  I sprayed one side with sea salt spray (Garnier Fructis Beach Chic) and then French braided it and tied it off with a small elastic.  I did the same to the other side.  Then in the morning, I let out the braids and used a flat iron to straighten the ends of any pieces that were weird from the elastic.  Then I changed the part for some volume and that's it!

December Empties

Hair Care Products:
Garnier Fructis Style Flat Iron Perfector Straightening Mist: I had used several bottles of this product in 2015.  It's a nice lightweight heat protectant that doesn't weigh down fine hair.  It's also very inexpensive but I felt like I needed to use a lot of it to protect my hair.  Therefore, I was flying through about a bottle every three weeks, which when you add it up, ends up costing more than something that is a little pricier but you need to use less of.  Right now, I'm using the Beyond the Zone Turn Up the Heat from Sally Beauty supply.  It costs more, but I only need to use a tiny amount each time so it's lasting me ages.
Salon Grafix Invisible Dry Spray Shampoo (travel size): I took this on my trip to Pittsburgh with me at Christmas.  It's my absolute favorite dry shampoo and I use it every day and buy the travel size for when I'm traveling.  I love it and I keep repurchasing it because it doesn't leave a white cast in my hair, it doesn't feel gross, and does a great job of absorbing oil and adding texture to my fine hair.
Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Curl Define & Hold Creme: I have had this for years.  I bought it ages ago for when I let my hair set in braids over night.  My hair is naturally straight so this did nothing but add weight and a greasy feel to it.  I would never buy it again and I'm glad it's gone.
Garnier Fructis Style Texture Tease: This stuff is awesome and I've already replaced it.  I love the way it adds grit and hold to my hair.  It is really wonderful to updos because it gives your hair some hold without feeling crunchy like hairspray can.  I recommend it but beware that if you use too much of it, it can leave a whitecast and make your hair hard to manage.

Skin Care Products:
Equate 2-in-1 Daily Facial Cloths: I love these for taking off my makeup at the end of the day.  I've already repurchased them and love how easily they get off 95% of my makeup.
Acne.org Benzoyl Peroxide Treatment: I love this too!  I buy the enormous bottle you see here on Amazon and only go through one about once every four to six months.  It costs quite a bit but if I only replace it twice a year, it's a huge bargain compared to buying hundreds of the little bottles of 2.5% benzoyl peroxide sold in drugstores.  It keeps my skin much clearer than it used to be without drying it out too much.  I've already reordered another bottle.
DG Beauty Makeup Remover Wipes: This is another item that was bought for my travels.  I like these Dollar General makeup wipes to remove the 5% of makeup that the daily facial cloths don't get (just a bit of leftover eyeliner).  These come in a ten pack for one dollar and I always get them for when I travel because they are the cheapest and work really great.

Cosmetic Products:
Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black: I seem to go through about one of these a month.  It's my favorite mascara and I always go back to it.  I love that it holds a curl well because it's waterproof and it doesn't flake off.  My lashes are already long but this makes them look darker and more noticeable.
NYC In A New York Minute Nail Polish in Grand Central Station: I like to use this clear polish as a top coat.  I actually had two bottles of this that were both half empty and not really usable any more because the brush couldn't get down to the polish so I combined the bottles and made one usable bottle.  Trying not to be wasteful, as top coat isn't something I find to be a fun repurchase.  I like this one but I'm not sure how well it's working for me, as my last two manicures have chipped within just a couple of days.

So that's it!  The last empties of 2015!  I'm actually thinking about in 2016 saving all of my makeup empties throughout the year (not hair or skin empties), just to see how much makeup I'm actually using up.  But then at the same time, I was thinking, 'How much do I really want to hang on to my garbage for en entire year?'.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do.  Thoughts?

Non-Beauty Christmas Haul

Today I'm sharing a few more things I got for Christmas this year that were non-beauty related.  First, let's start with the largest item and then we'll work around clockwise.  In the bottom left corner, we have a beautiful flameless candle that Brian bought me for Christmas.  It came with this festive wintery wreath.  He thought it would look nice in the background of my YouTube videos and he came up with the great idea to change out the wreath for each season.

Next, we have Archer Farms Candy Cane coffee 3 pack for the Keurig.  I don't have a Keurig but we have one in my office at work so this coffee will be a nice treat when I go back to work on Monday.

The hello beauty full mug was another gift from Brian.  That will be a sweet reminder in the mornings when I drink my coffee from it.

If I'm not feeling in the mood for Candy Cane coffee at work, I can also have some Swiss Miss hot chocolate.  I'm curious to see if it tastes the same as the stuff in the packet.

Finally, my sister-in-law bought me a lovely Golden Peach Sparkle three wick candle from Bath & Body Works Home.  It smells really nice and I'm actually burning it right now as I type up this post.

Thanks for stopping by!  I hope you had a great Christmas and a wonderful New Year!  Here's to a great 2016!
