CHOP!

That's right, I chopped off about half of my hair!  Or whatever sound a razor makes because that's how my stylist achieved this textured, choppy look.  I'm loving it so far but we'll see how I do styling it on my own tomorrow.  I'm really excited!

Weekly Makeup Bag Recap, 4-26-15

Another week gone by!  This week actually went by really quickly for me because I was so busy all week at work.  We have a lot going on right now and this past Tuesday was family night.  The day before I had to go do all of the shopping for the team so really ended up working quite a lot of hours this week.  I can't believe there are only a few more days left in April already.  But enough chatter, let's get on with the products I wore this past week.

Weekly Makeup Bag Recap, 4-19-15

Sundays are always a good day to reflect and today I'm reflecting on YouTube.  I've been thinking about getting back into making videos again because I miss it.  However, I don't have a ton of free time to devote to it but I was thinking I could probably handle making one video a week, especially if they are sort of lower maintenance videos like hauls, get ready with me, or favorites.  Any one care to weigh in?  Meanwhile, here's the makeup that I wore this week!

Face Products:
Physician's Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50 Bronzer in Fair
NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder in Sunny
Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation in Buff
Rimmel Matte BB Cream in Light
Rimmel Original BB Cream in Light
Maybelline Super Stay 24HR Concealer in Cream
Nyx Control Freak Brow Gel
Maybelline Define-A-Brow in Medium Brown
Pixi Brightening Peach Correction Concentrate in Brightening Peach
L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder in n1: Soft Ivory
Maybelline Mineral Power Pressed Powder Finishing Veil Powder in Light
Wet N Wild Color Icon Bronzer in Reserve Your Cabana (highlight)

Random Stuff:
This week's photos are kind of disorganized since I used my Unii Palette.  I didn't want to have to include more pictures than necessary.

Eyeshadows:
L'Oreal Infallible Eyeshadow in Iced Latte
Nyx Eyeshadow Single in Champagne
Nyx Eyeshadow Single in Bare My Soul

Blushes:
Milani Minerals Blush in Mai Tai
e.l.f. Studio Blush in Pink Passion

Other Eye Products:
(not pictured) Smashbox Limitless Eyeliner Pencil in Onyx (Not pictured because I left it sitting on my desk at work!)
Maybelline Unstoppable Eyeliner in Onyx
Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Mascara in Glam Black
Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black
Maybelline Pumped Up Colossal Volum' Express Mascara in Classic Black
Milani Eye Shadow Primer

Lips:
I kept it simple this week and used my SK lippie a lot.  It's really low maintenance and great for warm days when you don't want to feel like your lipstick is melting off your face.
Hard Candy Plumping Serum Volumizing Lip Gloss in Girl Next Door
Sonia Kashuk Shine Luxe Sheer Lip Color in Sheer Pink Lust
Cover Girl Colorlicious Lipstick in Darling Kiss

And for the grande finale, we have... ta da! My new and already much loved Unii Palette!  Once I make my final decisions about which items I want to keep in this palette, I plan on doing a post or video or something but for now, I experimented a lot this week with different products that are currently in my Unii Palette.  The items that I used were:

Physician's Formula Organic Wear 2-in-1 Bronzer & Blush in Light Bronzer/Pink Rose
Mary Kay Mineral Blush in Citrus Bloom
Physician's Formula Matte Collection Quad in Canyon Classics (the four rounded rectangles)
Sally Girl Eye Shadow Single in Champagne
Cover Girl Eye Shadow Single in Brown Smoulder
Cover Girl Eye Shadow Single in Tapestry Taupe

Pedicure

This was a crazy, busy, exciting week at work!  I mentioned in this post, way back in October, a possible opportunity for me and I found out some more information yesterday about it and it's looking like it might actually go somewhere.  That's all I can say for now but some things might be changing for me this summer and I'm really excited about new possibilities.  But, back on task: toes.

Last Sunday, my cat insisted on helping me paint my toenails as I did a pedicure.  I now have beautiful red-orange toenails with cat fur in them.  :-P  Just kidding... maybe.  I used Orly Bonder as a base coat, followed by two coats of Essie Meet Me At Sunset.  Finally, I added a coat of NYC In A New York Color Minute Grand Central Station as a top coat.

I love how fun and summery this came out looking.  My students debated whether my toes were orange or red but I guess they are all correct because this shade is a bit of both.  I'm loving just letting my toes hang out in sandals right now, as our weather here is quite warm lately.  I hope you're enjoying your weather too!  I'm off now to run some errands and bask in the sunshine!  Happy Weekend!

Seeing Pan

A couple of days ago I hit pan on a powder and it got me to thinking that I wonder how many items I currently have in my collection that I actually could see pan on.  The answer is: 6!  Now I do finish products, but when I start to see pan I often try to use up that item but let's face it, some take longer than others.  I swear I hit pan on those bronzers three years ago and I'm still barely making a dent in them even though I use them every day!

1. Rue Beauté Natural Eye Kit
2. Physician's Formula Healthy Wear SPF Bronzer in Fair
3. NYC Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder in Sunny
4. Maybelline Mineral Power Pressed Powder Finishing Veil Powder in Light
5. Cover Girl Cheekers Blush in Pretty Peach
6. Wet N Wild Eye Shadow Single in Brulee

How do you feel about hitting pan?  I'm trying to use up some of these items but the Natural Eye Kit and the blush I sort of want to save and make last.  Is that weird?

My Most Used Eye Brushes

I'm back for round 2 of my most used brushes and today I'm talking about eye brushes.  Again, I use a lot of other brushes as well but these are the ones I reach for on a daily basis, no matter what eye look I'm wearing.

1. e.l.f. Studio Eyeshadow "C" Brush - I use this brush to apply my highlight shade.  I don't really think it's any better than their Essential Eye Shadow Brush but I like that I can tell the two of them apart.  Is that weird?  I feel like it is.  ;)
2. Soho Crease Brush - I don't see this brush on the Soho website any more, so I linked the title to a previous blog post I had written that gave a lot of detailed information about this brush.  I really like it as a blending brush because it's soft and really big and fluffy.
3. e.l.f. Essential Eye Shadow Brush - I love this brush more than any other I've tried for packing color on the lid.  I will say though that not all of these brushes are created equal.  I've had three different brushes identical to this one and one was cut crooked and the other shed like crazy but this one is awesome.
4. e.l.f. Essential Concealer Brush - I know this is meant to be for concealer but I like to use this tiny brush to apply highlight to the inner corner of my eyes.  Its tiny size lets it get into fine places with precision.
5. Sonia Kashuk Smudge Brush #105 - This is another tiny brush.  I love this one for smudging shadow under my lower lash line.  This one is similar in size to the e.l.f. concealer brush, but the bristles are stubbier and shorter and have less flexibility so I feel like I get more control under the lashes.  It's also good for smudging out liner on your top lashes for a softer liner look.
6. Essence of Beauty Crease Brush - So I can't seem to find a link to buy this on the Internet.  Sad!  I hope this set is still available because it's just an awesome brush.  It came in a set of two crease brushes and I find this larger of the two is the perfect size for me for applying my crease shade without it being muddy looking.  It's precise enough to get the shadow exactly where you want before you blend.

What are your most used makeup brushes?  Anyone have some good drugstore brush recommendations?

My Most Used Face Brushes

I've really gotten into a routine lately with my makeup brushes where I find myself using the same ones often and being very satisfied with how they are performing.  I thought I would share the ones I use the most and what I use them for.  I included links to any brushes that I could find more information about as well.

1. EcoTools Powder Brush - I use this as intented, to apply powder over my foundation.  I find that it applies a good amount of product for me, not too much and not too little.
2. Real Techniques Expert Face Brush - I love this brush for blending out foundation.  Not only does it do a great job of blending while still being small enough to get around your eyes or nose, but, here's the best part... it comes clean!  I have had other foundation brushes that I liked before but it was like they would get ruined because you just couldn't get the product out.  I don't know about you but I don't want nasty old foundation and bacteria being rubbed on my face over and over.  I got this one at Kohl's with a five dollar off coupon, but I think it would even be worth it for the full price of $9.  Plus it's really soft.
3. Angled Blush Brush - I got this brush at Walmart ages ago.  It was their generic sort of store brand, maybe Essential Tools?  Anyway, it is amazing.  It's incredibly soft, has lasted me years (although I did have to super glue the ferrel and handle back together on both this brush and my EcoTools powder brush) and was really inexpensive.  I use it to apply contour to my cheeks and sometimes to bronze my forehead/hairline.
4. Up & Up Blush Brush - I got this amazing brush at Target and I fell in love with it!  It's soft and the perfect size for me to apply blush.
5. e.l.f. Studio Blush Brush - I got this brush at the same time as the Up & Up one.  I actually feel like this one is way too small for me to apply blush with but I love it to highlight my cheekbones.
6. e.l.f. Studio Small Tapered Brush - I absolutely love this brush for setting my undereye concealer with powder.  It's the perfect size and can really get into those nooks and crannies of your eyes.  It's also soft and delicate enough for that sensitive area of my face.  I think it would make a good highlight brush as well.
7. e.l.f. Kabuki Face Brush - I love to use this brush when I go a little blush or bronzer crazy.  It's great to blend out large portions of your face with some circular motions.  It's really big and fluffy.  I always use it bare just to buff out color products.

And those are my most used face brushes!  Of course, that's not every brush I use but I tend to use these ones almost every day.  Stop by again soon for my most used eye brushes.

Tresemme Hairspray Comparison

A few months ago, when I was at Walmart looking to restock my beloved Tresemme Tres Two Hairspray, I got a little wild and tried going for the Climate Protection Finishing Spray instead.  Not sure what I was thinking.  At first, I really disliked it but now that I've had lots of times to experiment with it, I've found two very distinctive uses for each one and I really like them both now.  Here's how I use them.

Tresemme Tres Two Hair Spray
I like to use just a small amount of this all over my first day hair.  Generally, when I've freshly washed my hair, I'll wear it down in some way.  For this photo, I quickly flat ironed my naturally straight hair to keep the frizz away and I lightly misted this all over.  I like this hair spray for this purpose because it's lightweight but still holds well without making your hair feel sticky or clumping together.

Tresemme Climate Protection Finishing Spray
This climate protection version, I find to dry much harder and it makes my hair sort of stick together in chunks.  Not a pretty look for when I wear my hair down, but I find that with my fine, straight second day hair, this spray gives my hair lots of added texture that helps to hold in any backcombing that I do.  In this photo, I lightly teased the front and crown for just a little added volume.  Then I put my hair in a ponytail and gave quite a good spray to the hair in the ponytail and then gave it a good tease before twisting it into a bun with a second hair tie.  My hair is not that long right now so this makes my bun look fuller and thicker.  The spray holds the tease perfectly without being difficult to remove at the end of the day.  I also like that it doesn't flake and look like dandruff.  I just think this spray is perfect for this purpose.

Overall, I love both of these Tresemme products, for two different purposes.  I plan to repurchase each when I run out.

March Budget

This past month, with Brian and I flying out to Pittsburgh with one day's notice, things got a little hairy with the budget.  Mainly, I forgot about a couple of items that I had purchased right before leaving and and a few I bought while we were gone until I started working on this post!  It's okay though because we received some spending cash from our families while we were visiting that offset the extra $50 or so I ended up spending.  I'm not putting every single item in this post because it would probably be a long and boring list but I included all the cosmetic type items and the one clothing item.  Let's start with the photo above.

Sally Hansen Salon Effects: I actually had purchased another set of these but I already used them and blogged about them.  The other one I purchased and haven't used yet and the style is called Spot On.
Coastal Scents 28 Neutral Palette: Loving this neutral eye shadow palette!  It's a mix of shimmer, satin, and matte finishes.  It's a great palette for work days or any days.
Wet N Wild Color Icon Shadow Single in Brulee: This is a replacement, as I've hit pan on mine.  I've repurchased this item probably three or four times now.
Essence Sun Club Matt Bronzing Powder in 01: Blondes for Lighter Skin I purchased this for when I finally finish my other bronzer.
Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish Lipstick in 33: I bought this while in Pennsylvania because I've never seen this shade before and I love this line of lipsticks.
NYC Smooch Proof Liquid Lip Stain in On Everyone's Lips: I wanted to try out a lip stain that was a more natural color and for less than $3, this was low risk.  It's okay but not great.  More testing needed though.
Rimmel BB Cream in Light: I wrote a lot more about this in my travel makeup post but basically I bought this to serve as a dual moisturizer and foundation while traveling but it was quite a let down.  Not very moisturizing and way too dark for me.
Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black: This was a replacement, since I used up the other tube I had of this waterproof mascara.
Essence Lip Liner in Satin Mauve: I wanted a lip liner with more mauve and less brown than the others I have.  It's a good shade but I need to try it more.
Maybelline Define-A-Brow Pencil in Medium Brown: I used up one of these and needed a replacement.  I use it every day to make my brows more symmetrical.
Nyx Control Freak Brow Gel: This was another product to replace my other brow gel I used up.  I've only used it once so far but good first impression.
Jordana 12HR Made To Last Eyeshadow Pencil in Continuous Almond: I'd heard some people say this pencil made a great waterliner that lasted all day.  I still like the way my Rimmel Scandal Eyes in Nude works better but I haven't yet tried this as a shadow so I think it might make a good base.  I picked it up while in Pennsylvania, since there is a Kmart near our families there.  The nearest one to us here in Florida is like 35 minutes away.

Next, I have some fun decorative stuff!  First, I redid some stuff in my makeup area with some new shelving units from Target.  I got two of these and I love how they look!  Even my hubby commented on how much nicer they looked than the cheap end table I was using before.  And it gave me room to decorate a little.
Taylor Swift Wonderstruck Perfume: I have wanted a bottle of this perfume for ages (remember my manicure inspired by the bottle?) and I finally found that it's really discounted now that she has a bunch of other fragrances out there.  I love the bottle and the scent on this but it doesn't last long on me at all.
Room Essentials Adjustable 3 Shelf: These come in espresso or white.  I like that they have adjustable shelves and are big enough to hold most Sterilite drawers.
Slow Down sign: This sign reminds me to slow down and enjoy life and the process of starting my day with makeup and happiness.  I used a 40% coupon and got it for a great price!
Katy Perry Purr Perfume: I don't even really like the smell of this perfume that much.  I seriously only bought it because I thought the bottle was so stinking cute!  This is another perfume that is seriously discounted now that she has newer fragrances out there.  This 1.7oz bottle was only $14.90 at Bealls Outlet.  That's a good price for a cute decoration that can double as a perfume.
Pink Sign: This sign was another Bealls Outlet purchase.  We live right next to one and have a rewards card where every Friday, your whole purchase is 15% off!  This sign says: Our family runs on love, laughter, and strong coffee.  So true!  This little area of my makeup space is now my favorite spot in the house!

Scarf: And finally, I can't forget about my cat print scarf!  This is one of those items that I almost did forget about, which is weird because I've worn it at least ten times already.  If you can't tell from the Purr purchase, my husband and I are crazy cat people and when I saw this at the outlet mall for $8, I knew it had to be mine.  It's my new favorite.

Wow, this week went by so fast!  Before I know it, it will be summer and I'm very much glad about that.  This week I decided to try to use my Nyx Nude on Nude palette more.  It had been so long since I used this palette and I couldn't remember why.  After using it for five days in a row, I remember why.  The shadows are not the same texture that I usually expect from Nyx.  They are definitely usable but they are very crumbly and kind of chunky.  Workable but not as awesome as their single shadows are.

March Favorites

I love monthly favorites posts!  They are just so easy to write when you're basically talking about stuff you've been loving.  Here's what I've been enjoying this month.

Coastal Scents 28 Neutral Palette: I ordered this palette at the beginning of the month and used it at least ten times this month.  It's just sort of a no brainer for work since everything (except one random hot pink shade) is very neutral.  I will say that I feel like a lot of my looks come off very similar because many shades in the palette are similar, but that doesn't really bother me.
e.l.f. Studio Blush in Pink Passion: This blush is so pretty!  It's really crazy looking bright in the pan but it just gives your face a subtle healthy glow if you wear it sheer.
Revlon Colorstay Whipped Creme Foundation in Buff: You realize just how attached you are to your foundation when you have to travel without it and feel slightly panicked.  This just was too big and bulky to take with me for a weekend stay.  I'm about halfway through this tub and I already know I'll be repurchasing it.  The coverage is good, it blends easily, and lasts through the day.
Essence Silky Touch Blush in Autumn Peach: This is another pretty blush that gives a great glow and is easy to apply.  I've been using this at least once a week.
Physician's Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50 Bronzer in Fair: I've had this blush for ages but I'm starting to see some major pan on it and now that it's days are numbered, I'm sort of sad.  It's just a really great bronzer for fair skin but I will take heart in the fact that I've already found a replacement that I love.  (Essence Sun Club Matt Bronzing Powder in 01: Blondes - Lighter Skin)
Rimmel Fix and Perfect Pro Primer: This primer smells nice to me and works like a dream.  Some primers make my forehead look greasy (worse than if I wore no primer) but this one just works great for my skin.
Wet N Wild Color Icon Bronzer in Reserve Your Cabana:  I love using this as a highlight for my cheekbones.  It's the only highlight that I have that isn't super shimmery and I love that about it.
Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Nude Eyeliner (pewter shade): This liner went with me on my trip and reminded me just how nice it is.  The shimmer in it makes it less easy to tell when your liner isn't so perfect.
Rimmel Scandal Eyes Liner in Nude: This liner is a miracle worker.  When you didn't get enough sleep the night before, this just brightens up the lower water line and it wears quite well for me.
Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black: It was a rainy March for me and this waterproof mascara kept me from looking weepy.  It also holds a curl really well and I had forgotten how much I love waterproof mascaras for that purpose.
Rimmel Kate Lasting Finish Lipstick in 08: This is the perfect shade of lipstick.  It adds a little something without looking overdone and fussy.  I swear, it's perfect for any occassion and it's become my go to lip color.
Milani Eye Shadow Primer: This primer just kicks butt!  I've tried several primers and this one is the best, including a couple of high end ones.  It just somehow magically keeps my shadow from ever creasing when nothing else could and it's so affordable.
Savvy Satin Eye Shadow Trio in Vintage Wines: This traveled with me to Pittsburgh and reminded me how awesome this tiny little trio is!  They are so easy to apply and blend out and it takes up barely any space.  This may become my go to travel shadow.
Wet N Wild Color Icon Shadow Single in Brulee: I've hit some major pan on this guy and with good reason.  This is a matte cream shade that I find makes the perfect natural looking brow highlight.  It can also double as an under eye setting powder.  It can even do triple duty.  I use it to clean up any mistakes when I contour my eyes.  If the dark powder goes further down than I want, a little of this shadow can clean it up.

March Empties

Empties are funny because some months I have a ton and some months I don't have much at all.  This month there are only a few, which wasn't that surprising to me because I had so many last month.  And I have several products that I'm close to finishing in the next few days so I won't be surprised at all if next month I have a lot as well.  Here's what I finished off in March.

1. TopCare Hypoallergenic Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes - I get these at my local Winn-Dixie.  They often go on sale for around $2 and then I tend to stock up because I haven't found any other brand of makeup wipes that Iike as much as these.  You get thirty in a pack so when they are on sale, you really can't beat the price.  I will definitely continue to purchase these and have already replaced them.
2. Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes - I bought these for our weekend trip to Pittsburgh since it was a small pack.  The pack of seven wipes was about $2.  These worked okay but I felt like I had to scrub more with these wipes than my TopCare ones.  I probably wouldn't repurchase these.
3. Essence Lash & Brow Gel Mascara - I used this to set my brows.  It worked well but I found that the wand pulled off a lot more gel than I needed so I was always trying to wipe off the excess and felt like I wasted a lot of the product.  It was okay but I've purchased the Nyx Control Freak Brow Gel to replace it.
4. Maybelline Define A Brow Pencil in Medium Brown - This pencil is perfect for what I need.  I have pretty thick brows already but they aren't symmetrical.  One is a bit thicker than the other so I really just use this to darken them and make them look more like they match.  This pencil does a good job of that and is dry enough that it doesn't slip off.  I've already repurchased a replacement.  However, I had to go to about four different stores to find this shade.  They didn't have it in stock at Ulta, Target, or Walmart but I managed to find it at CVS.  I'm hoping they aren't discontinuing that shade, as it's a pretty good match for me.
5. Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black - I just love the way this mascara holds a curl and makes my lashes look longer and darker.  My lashes are already really long but not that thick.  I've repurchased this already but next time I might try a different waterproof mascara.  I've had a lot of irritation with my eyes lately and have actually been to the eye doctor to find a solution.  They have me trying several different kinds of contacts right now and the one day, my eyes were really itchy and irritated and after much rubbing of them, I noticed this mascara had flaked off all over my under eye area and was giving me a raccoon look.  I'm thinking of trying the Maybelline Pumped Up Colossal Mascara next.  It might be just different enough for me without straying too far from my beloved Colossal.
6. e.l.f. Studio SPF 45 Sunscreen - This powder was a hot mess for me.  It was sold as like a one-color-fits-all powder but it was way too orange for me.  I used it for a while on weekends and when I wasn't working or going anywhere just to use it up.  Then I thought the orangey tone in it might be good for color correction under my eyes so I started using it there.  However, I found it to crease and settle into fine lines very badly.  One day I looked in the mirror and thought to myself, 'When did I start looking so old?'.  When I stopped using it under my eyes, suddenly I looked normal again.  I very much disliked this powder.  I will not repurchase it and I wouldn't recommend it.
7. Physician's Formula Mineral Wear Talc Free Mineral Face Powder in Translucent Light - I feel like since my PF Healthy Wear Powder Foundation was discontinued, I've been wandering listlessly from one powder to the other, searching for the perfect replacement.  I've used a couple of these talc free compacts and decided this is not the one for me.  It tends to look a little heavy on the skin and when you dip your brush into it, powder flies everywhere.  I guess that's because it's talc free?  I'm trying out a few other powders right now, but haven't found a replacement that I love.  Anyone have suggestions?
