Unsung Heroes

There are a few unsung heroes in my makeup routine that I don't really mention very often but I use pretty often.

Milani Eyeshadow Primer - This is my current absolute favorite eyeshadow primer.  I have a real problem with shadows creasing, even when I use a high end primer.  This is one of the only ones that I've found that I never have creasing issues with and it's really affordable too.

e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set - This is a great way to set my makeup and also take away powdery look after applying my makeup.

Essence Last & Brow Gel Mascara - This is a nice way to set my brow pencil and also hold my brows in place.  It's not my absolute favorite brow gel ever but it does the job.

Maybelline Super Stay Concealer - This is a concealer that I only ever use if I have blemishes.  When you have something to cover, this has enough power to do so.

e.l.f. Essential Eyelash Curler - This is the best lash curler I've ever used.  I love that it's wide enough to fit all my lashes without pinching off the ends and ripping out lashes.  Also, my lashes are already really long but they are very straight and not always very visible without curling.

Totally Monday OOTD

Today was totally Monday.  As in, no amount of coffee is enough and boy howdy, do I hate the world and why can't it be Saturday every day.  I was very crabby to go back to work after far too short of a weekend that involved far too much getting stuff done around the house... and my house is still dirty.  I didn't feel relaxed yesterday and didn't sleep well last night.  So photo taking at 6:00 this morning went something like this:

Photo 1 - Completely out of focus, blurry, and unusable.  Is that a sasquatch?

Photo 2 - This time cut off my feet.  Try to take another photo with my feet in the shot.

Photo 3 - Overcompensate and cut off my head.  Realize the coloring of the pants is way off from real life.  (They are navy, not cobalt.)  Good enough, because if I don't get going, Monday morning at work is going to be even worse than it already will be.

So you get photos two and three.  If you put them together, you'd get one decent photo.  On the plus side, there's only one Monday each week.

Mattes: Eye Shadows

I found that through the month of December and into the beginning of January, my skin was really drier than usual.  An effect of that dry skin was more visible lines that made me feel like it was adding a few years to my face.  As I combated that dry skin, I took to wearing matte shadows and blushes more often to try to reduce the look of those lines.  My skin is back to a more normal texture for me now, but I thought it would be nice to share some of my favorite mattes in eye shadows and blushes from the drugstore.  I'm not sure if some of these are discontinued but maybe someone else has the same thing kicking around in their collection and this might remind them to pull that out and use it again. I'll also be posting my matte blushes tomorrow or the next day so stop in for that post too.

Makeup Brush Drying Rack

I wanted to share a product I ordered from Amazon that is making life way easier for me.  It's the Magik Drying Pro Brush Drying Tree (Classic 2).  It holds 26 makeup brushes so that the bristles face down and the water stays away from the ferrule of the brush.  Your brushes dry faster and last longer when the moisture moves away from the glue holding the brush together.

The rack also takes up very little space, as it comes apart into three pieces.  The two legs fit into each other to form an X and the top rests on the legs.

And I love that when it's put together, it takes up very little counter space.  When it's taken apart, you can store it without taking up any space, since it's so compact.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants an easy way to dry their brushes that doesn't take up much space.

As a sidenote, I first ordered this drying rack from Amazon and it came missing one of the legs.  After I returned it, I noticed in the reviews that I was not the only person who received that same product with a missing leg so save yourself the trouble and spend a few more dollars for the one that I ended up with.

Makeup Fails

I have a few makeup fails to share with you today.  These items are so bad that I'm struggling to even find a way to use them and I'm thinking about just tossing them.  That's rare for me, as I hate to waste money but sometimes I just go for those impulse buys without doing my research and end up with some items I'm just not happy about.  That's the case with all four of these.

Cover Girl Clean Oil Control Foundation in Ivory
I'm not sure if the problem with this foundation is the formula or the fact that my bottle is so old.  I found blog posts from 2012 where I wrote about trying to use this up so it's at least two years old.  I think I didn't love it in the first place either but it's just awful for me right now.  It's too light, it's hard to blend, and the finish on my skin is just awful.  There's nothing like looking at your face after you apply your first bit of makeup and seeing that your skin is not even, but rather more streaky and patchy than before you started.  My skin is not particularly dry right now (except right around my eyes, where I don't apply this) but it somehow seems to find an area that is the least bit dry and just cling to it.  Also, I suspect it may have been the cause of some break outs about two weeks ago.

Pacifica Color Quench Natural Moisture Lip Tint in Guava Berry
Where do I even begin with this one?  Number one: in my opinion, tinted lip balm should change the color of your lips, at least slightly.  This does nothing and barely has any color even when swatched on the hand.  Number two: it's not very hydrating either.  That said, it pretty much has nothing going for it and I have no desire to use it at all when I have so many other more awesome lip products.

NYC Big Bold Volume by the Lash Mascara
I really should have done my homework on this mascara.  Shame on my impulses for steering me wrong.  There are a number of faults with this mascara for me, however I could see this working for someone else.  It has a ginormous rubber bristle brush which is hard for me to maneuver.  The brush is similar to Cover Girl Lash Blast but actually the spikes are longer and pick up more product.  The brush picks up so much product that even if I wipe as much of it off onto a tissue as possible, it is still coated with way too much mascara that turns my lashes into nasty goopy spiders.  The brush just sucks in my opinion.  I thought maybe trying it with a different brush would help, so I used an old empty tube of Maybelline Colossal Volum Express and just used the brush from it.  Still no go.  The formula of the mascara also sucks.  It's too wet and therefore still goops up my lashes, even with a different brush.  It flakes big time and then the flakes smear and leave black streaks on my face.  I could go on, but I think you get the point.  Lash Blast definitely has a better formula.  The only thing I can say for this mascara is that it's really black and holds a curl decently but all the downfalls make it not worth it to me.

Nyx Jumbo Lip Pencil in Pink Nude
My problem with this product lies solely in the color that I selected.  I have other shades of these jumbo pencils that I really like but this particular color is a very light, very frosty pink.  The shade reminds me of a lipgloss that I wore way too much back in eighth grade.  However, I am no longer fourteen and this shade is not flattering on me now and probably wasn't flattering back then either.  But that is totally my fault for not looking for swatch samples before buying this.

So that's my beef with these products.  When you find something that is a makeup fail for you, do you try to use it up, or just toss it?  I really think that I hate these four things so much I just want to toss them.  It seems a shame to force myself to use these items that I really hate when I have so many items in my collection that I could be using instead that I love.  What do you think?

Recreate Someone Else's Mani

This post somehow got lost in my drafts folder and never got published.  Better late than never, right?

Today's nail challenge was to recreate someone else's mani from earlier in the challenge.  Since I did this challenge by myself, I just decided to recreate someone else's mani that I liked.  I decided on beach waves from The Nailasaurus.  No surprise that mine is not as awesome as Sammy's but I still really liked it.

I started out with two coats of NYC Fashion Safari.  I really love the formula on this particular polish.  It's thin enough to apply easily yet easily opaque in two coats.  It's a perfect mannequin hands polish for me.

After that was dry, I used a makeup wedge sponge to dab on Essie Coat Azure to the tips.  Finally I used an eyeshadow sponge applicator to apply Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On to make the foam on the waves.  I topped it all off with a coat of NYC Grand Central Station.

I can't believe I'm done with this nail challenge!  To be honest, I'm kind of happy about it.  I need to remember that 31 days is too many nail challenges for me.  I get bored with it around day 15.  If I do this again in the future, I'll have to remember to pick a shorter challenge.

Acrylic Makeup Caddy

I mentioned in this post that I had purchased an acrylic makeup caddy from Marshalls.  It was also featured in my Makeup Station Before & After post but I really wanted to give the caddy its own post because it's just so awesome.

First of all, I love that it is compact enough to fit in the space between the main section of my makeup desk and the upper deck.  I positioned the taller makeup items so they were not under the top layer, or you could also lay them flat.

This is what it looks like when it is empty.  There are four small sections, which are large enough to each hold four average sized lipsticks.  Then there are two medium sections, which can hold two compacts, turned on the side.  There are also two large sections, which can hold three to four compacts on their sides.  Finally, there is one extra large section that is big enough for a small makeup palette, eyelash curler, and could hold products like mascara if they were placed down flat.

I set mine up with several products that I plan to use for the next couple of days and you can see just how much I was able to fit in.  And I actually still have plenty of room left!  I also love that it has a handle, which makes it easy to tuck it out of the way or just grab it and go if you were going to apply your makeup somewhere else.

And just to show how much I have stuffed into this little caddy, here is everything shown in the photo above laid out so you can see.  I bought mine at Marshalls for $12.99 but I've seen similar ones here on Amazon's website and here on Target's website.

Makeup Storage Solutions

Yesterday I posted about some general changes that I made to my makeup storage area and today I want to focus in specifically on some budget friendly makeup storage solutions that I came up with.  I redid this whole area for less than $30 and really made it something that works better for me and is also pretty!

For starters, I purchased the hanging wire basket from Amazon.  This was my most expensive piece but I had to find something that worked with my space.  The way this book case is constructed causes the bottom shelf to be ridiculously tall and it wastes so much vertical space.  This wire shelf slides on to the existing shelf without taking up any valuable space.  I already had the white and black photo box, which now holds my empties.

Then if you look in the center of the above photo, there is a cute little lipstick organizer.  I was stalking Amazon for one of these and it popped up one day available for Amazon Prime shipping and I jumped on it.  I'm so happy I did!  It's small but holds 24 lipsticks and displays them really nicely.  In this photo, it's not even full because I have several in my weekly makeup bag right now.  I particularly like that this organizer is sort of tiered so you can see the lipsticks in the back as well.

Behind the lipstick organizer is a black and white box that I believe came full of Ulta brand makeup.  It was a gift from my husband for Christmas and while the makeup is now in my Z palettes, I kept the box because it was really cute and functional.  It holds some watches, earrings, and other accessories that I don't wear that often.  It fit perfectly into the space here to prop up my glass of cream blushes so that's really the only reason it is there.  Otherwise the blushes are too low and hidden behind the lipsticks.  The blushes are being held in a Roman urn glass candle vase from Dollar Tree.  To the right of the lipstick organizer is another glass from Dollar Tree that's holding my tinted lip balms.

Now, to my absolutely favorite part of this area, the lippie lazy Susan!  I really wanted a great way to store all of my lip glosses and overflow lip products.  My requirements were that it be affordable, cute, store all of my glosses standing up so they didn't leak, and I wanted to have easy access to all of my products.  One day this week, on the way to work in the early morning hours, it dawned on me to just use some glass containers on an inexpensive lazy Susan.  I love love love how this turned out!

Here's what it looks like from above.  First, the lazy Susan.  It has a rubbery grip so nothing slides around.  There is also a lip around the edge that keeps things from flinging off when you spin it.  Next, the three large square containers were something I found in the candle section of Dollar Tree.  They are really heavy duty but this lazy Susan is hefty enough to hold them.  The three smaller containers were just random things I had around the house.  The one holding my three Maybelline Shine Sensational lip glosses was a small Bath and Body Works candle that I melted and cleaned the jar.  The one holding my four mini glosses is actually a sorority shot glass I had from college but never use now (go Delta Zeta!) and the small glass and metal container is a votive holder that Brian brought me back from his travels to Ireland years ago.  I love that I can just grab a container and dig through it to find what I want.  The three larger containers are sort of organized by colors: light pink/rose and nude, peach and coral, and red, berry, and bright.  And the grand total for this lazy Susan lippe holder was under $10 for me!

Budget:
hanging wire basket from Amazon: $9.97 (exact)
lipstick organizer from Amazon: $7.39 (exact)
Roman urn glass vase/candle holder from Dollar Tree: $1.00 (exact)
lazy Susan turntable from Target: $5.99 (exact)
four square glass candle holders from Dollar Tree: $4.00 (exact)
random empty glass containers from around the house: $0.00
Total Amount Spent: $28.35

More Changes

This weekend I made some more changes to my makeup area.  After using my new set up for a few weeks, I had realized there were a few things that just weren't working for me.  Namely, my lip products were too high up on the shelf and difficult for me to see or even access while I was sitting in my makeup chair.  Also, I had noticed that some of my lip glosses were leaking from being stored on their side.  I really wanted to find an inexpensive way to make them easier to see, reach, and therefore use.  I'm actually really pleased with the idea I came up with!  It was very inexpensive and I think it's very user friendly as well as aesthetically pleasing.  I'll have a separate, detailed post about some of the items but let's look at some of the general changes I made since my last update here.

On the top shelf, you can see I swapped out the black and white box for the Paris book box.  You'll see why in a moment.  The second shelf is a rather big change.  I moved my nail polishes up a shelf, removed the red drawers, and moved the makeup sign and basket behind it.

And here you can see the biggest change, which is the bottom shelf that you're seeing in this photo.  I actually removed all of my lip products from the black and white drawers and put them all on display, along with some cream blushes.  The white and black box fit behind my lipstick organizer perfectly and it props the cream blushes up high enough that you can see them now.  Also, a wire add on shelf holds another white and black box with empties in it.

Finally, the last changes are around this set of drawers.  I moved the stuff that was on the very top shelf so that my palettes could really take center stage.  My self tanning items are now just to the side of the drawers.  I moved my clock over to here so I could see it better and also put all of my mascaras on display in an old glass I had around the house.

OOTD & Natural Hair

It was requested by Susan to share some outfit posts.  Lately I've been wearing a lot of outfits that have already been posted to the blog but today's was just different enough that it seemed worth sharing.  It's nothing fancy but it was cute and kept me warm today!  Also, I've been wearing my hair natural a lot more often lately in an attempt to keep it more healthy.  So this is pretty much what my natural hair looks like.  I didn't blow dry it last night or straighten it this morning like I used to.  I just clipped one side out of my face.  You can see it's pretty straight but the ends don't really behave properly.  I'm at that point of exhaustion lately where I don't really care though.  It saves me some time in my daily routine.

Wife of the Year Haul

My husband has been working his tail off lately, coaching lacrosse at the school where he teaches.  That has left me to pick up the slack on many of the chores he used to do or that we used to do together because he's just not home very much anymore.  Friday we had planned to do a bunch of errands together: going to Kohl's to pick him up polar fleece sweatshirts for practice since they were on sale, going to Target for a few things, going grocery shopping, and cleaning the house.  I had a training that day and got out of work early so I ran all the errands while he was still working.  When he called me and found out all the things I did (so he could just come home and relax for once), he told me I was the wife of the year and should pick something up for myself.  Since I was at Target, I did!  This palette is something I've really been wanting but would normally never drop that much money for.  But with all the extra work I've been doing around the house lately, I felt like I deserved it.  Brian agreed.  :)  I'm happy to report that after using it several times, it seems well worth the twenty dollars.

Target Makeup Brushes

Anyone want to take bets on the two things I needed from Target this time?  A blush brush and batteries.  In my defense, this was a different Target than the one I usually go to and they had different items at this one, specifically a lot of e.l.f. items that my Target doesn't carry.  I love e.l.f. because you can try things and if they don't work out, you're only out a couple of bucks.

e.l.f. Studio Volume Plumping Mascara - I wanted to try out a new mascara.  Low risk at only three dollars.
e.l.f. Studio Blush Brush - I'm also experimenting with some different makeup brushes, since they were so inexpensive.  I find this one a bit small for blush but I'm actually quite liking it for applying highlighter right now.
Maybelline Baby Lips in Peach Kiss - I'm so addicted to tinted lip balms right now.  Low maintenance color with no mirror needed.
Nyx Round Lipstick in Tea Rose - As I said earlier this week, I have been trying to find this lipstick for years and it was always either sold out or someone had opened and swatched the stick or nicked it.  No longer!

e.l.f. Studio Small Tapered Brush - I actually bought this brush to apply highlighter but I'm currently using it to apply powder under my eyes.  I'm still figuring out exactly how I want to use this brush.
e.l.f. Studio Kabuki Face Brush - I do own two kabuki brushes both they were both like a free with other stuff you bought deal and were not really working for what I needed.  This one is far larger and softer and I plan to use it to quickly blend my blush, bronzer, and highlighter.
e.l.f. Essential Eyelash Curler Refill X3 - For years, I have been faithfully loving my e.l.f. Essential Eyelash Curler but my Target didn't carry the refill pads so I would have to buy a whole new lash curler every time.  No more waste!  I stocked up so I would be good for the next year or so.
Up & Up Blush Brush - After checking out several e.l.f. brushes for blush, I just didn't love the size of any of them for blush.  I was feeling a little Goldilocks... this one was too big, that one was too small.  But this Up & Up brush seemed just right.  Now if it just passes the softness test, life will be good.  I have sensitive skin and scratchy brushes tend to really bother my skin.  I actually really wanted this one but $17 is just way more than I wanted to spend.  If I don't love this one, I guess I'll have to check out Walgreens or CVS or maybe even Ulta.  Real Techniques has a nice blush brush that's similar to the Sonia Kashuk one but far more affordable.
L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder in N1 Soft Ivory - Ever since my beloved Physician's Formula Healthy Wear Powder was discontinued, I feel like I've been trying to find the perfect replacement powder with no luck.  I'd heard good things about this powder but I really had no clue what shade to go for!  They give you a series of questions to answer in order to match you but I found my answer to most questions was "Um, I'm not sure.  Both?"  So I just went with the neutral shade to try to play it safe.  I actually think that oddly, it's a little light on me.  Usually when lines have four or five options, I'm the lightest shade but I guess with this many options, I should have realized that I should go slightly darker.  I'm hoping it would balance out with a foundation that's a shade too dark.
L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Blush in Precious Peach - This was the peachy shade that coordinated with the powder I picked.  Needless to say, my first impression is that it is also too light and I was disappointed in the pigmentation.  Maybe it was the lighting so I'll try to give it another chance before I make my final verdict.

Budget for February

The last week of January wasn't the greatest for us.  Several unexpected expenses caused our savings account to be diminished to far lower than what we are happy with.  (Do cars always require costly repairs just as they are about to be paid off?  It's like they know or something.)  In an attempt to replenish our savings, hubby and I came up with a tighter monthly budget and decided on an amount we want to put into savings each week.  One of the things we decided was to tighten up our nonessential spending.  Seeing all the stuff I hauled in January, this seemed like a good place to start.  We agreed on a $150 spending limit each,  which includes things like hair products, makeup, nail polish, clothes, and entertainment.  (We are including any skin care items as part of our monthly grocery bill, since acne products and SPF are kind of essentials to us.)  We also have a friendly husband-wife competition to see who can spend less.  There is no prize for the winner, just bragging rights, but I'm sure I'm going to win.  I know how to pinch a penny!  I do have a couple more things to share that I bought in January before all this car trouble began but February is expected to be much more conservative.

So I'm wondering, how do you save money?  I'd love any tips for saving on clothes or makeup or even groceries!  I'll also be posting every so often on how the budgeting is going.  Wish me luck!
