Current Favorites

Getting ready in the morning lately has been a bit of a hassle.  I feel like no matter what time I get out of bed or no matter what I do, I always seem to be running late and in a hurry.  These makeup items have helped me to get ready faster while still feeling put together.

1. Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral Matte Eyeshadow Palette - I've been combining the more subtle colors in this palette for quick looks that don't need a lot of blending and still look professional.
2. Milani Powder Blush in Romantic Rose and 3. Milani Minerals Blush in Mai Taie - Two matte blushes that blend easily while perking up your face so you look more alive.
4. Rimmel Eyeliner in Nude - great to line the water line and look like you got more sleep than you really did.
5. Maybelline Unstoppable Eyeliner in Espresso - I like that this quick and easy liner instantly makes my face look "done".  I struggle with pencil liner so much less than liquid.
6. Nyx Mega Shine Lip Gloss in Beige - Actually a soft pink and shiny.  Now you look like you actually put in some effort.
7. Sonia Kashuk Shine Luxe Sheer Lip Color in Sheer Mauve Lust - This lippie is great because it gives you a hint of color and shine without being so high maintenance that you need a mirror to apply it.  Swipe and go!

Shopping My Stash

I'm really trying to keep things simple in my makeup life right now.  I have to be out of the house for job earlier than what I used to when I was teaching so I really just don't have time to do a bunch of different steps in my makeup routine.  This week is going to be a particularly busy one so I've decided to utilize some makeup palettes to help simplify things.

1. Coastal Scents 28 Neutral Palette - This palette (shadows shown below) has lots of easy to wear light and medium colors that are great for the lids or highlighting your brow bone.  I don't really find the amount of contour shades that satisfying either, and it's got a lot more satin and shimmer shades and not much matte.
2. Z Palette  - This one has seven shades of blush in it and even a bronzer for good measure.
3. Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral Matte Palette - This is just a great palette and provides all the things the Coastal Scents Palette is missing.  Together, they provide all the neutral shades I could want.

Let's hope that having all the things I need in one place will help me get ready faster in the morning.  I know this is going to be a busy week!

Under, Over, In Between

Do you ever get coupons for stores in the mail?  I love it when that happens, except that most of the time it's 10% off your purchase or $5 off of $50, which to me is not even worth it to go to the store because I would just end up spending money I wouldn't have in the first place.  But last week I got a coupon for J.C. Penney for $10 off a $10 purchase, which is enough to get this cheapskate into a store.  I found this super cute knit shell at my local store for $10.19 on clearance, costing me less than a garage sale find.  Score!  I thought it was a great layering piece so today I was experimenting with how it would look layered.  I came up with a few different ideas to wear it under, over, or in between other pieces.

Under: An easy way to layer is to toss a cardigan on top of the shell.  A neutral cardigan works well but I think playing with complimentary colors would be fun too.

Over: For this look, I paired the shell (which I call a sweater vest.  Is that just me?) over a button down shirt.  This is the way I see myself wearing this top the most.  I just love the dressy and sort of nerdy way this looks.  It definitely reminds me of Amy from The Big Bang Theory.  And as a self-proclaimed nerd, I'm totally okay with that!  Maybe I'll wear it with glasses and a pencil skirt for good measure.  ;)

In Between: Finally, I have the shell as an in between layer, sandwiched between a chambray button down and a khaki blazer.  This is great for those days with big temperature changes because the outfit remains cute even if you have to shed some layers.  Take off the blazer and roll up the sleeves and you're still stylish.

Which way is your favorite way to wear a shell: under, over, or in between?

Long time, no see friends!  I hope you've been well.  Work has been kicking my butt lately.  I really love my new job, but like all jobs, there are rough days.  My team and I have been super busy with all the projects we are launching and the last few weeks have been really draining, but exciting.  At the end of the week, this is how I feel.  Normally I use my free time on the weekends to take my photos for the blog and write my posts and then I publish them after work (except outfit posts).  But lately I just haven't had the energy on the weekends to do anything but sit on the couch and veg.  But it's helped me to recharge my batteries for the rest of the week.  This week I launched a new software application to the eight schools I do work for.  Which means every time something went wrong, I got an email (or twenty) telling (or yelling) about what is happening.  There turned out to be a big glitch on the side of the software company that caused problems with our data sync that rosters our classes (that makes total sense, right?) so to say the least, people weren't thrilled.  But they think they have it figured out so hopefully this week will smooth out the issues.  Anyway, I've found that with my new position, I have to leave my house earlier for work, since my hours start and end earlier and I have a longer drive.  So I don't have a lot of time to apply or think about my makeup.  And most of the other people I work with pretty much just stick with mascara and eyeliner so I try to keep it simple.  This week I shopped my makeup stash to prepare myself for the busy week ahead.  One less thing to think about!

August Empties

I have some August empties to share so let's start with hair products.

Tresemme Tres Two Hair Spray mini - I love this hair spray.  It's my favorite.
Garnier Flat Iron Perfector - This is a really great heat protector for fine hair.  It doesn't weigh my hair down and it's inexpensive.
Garnier Texture Tease - I really like this to add texture to my hair and give it some grip.
Garnier Root Amp - This is a spray mousse that I tried for the first time this month.  I'm not sure how I feel about it.  When you first spray it in, it's really sticky and kind of awful.  Once you dry your hair, the stickiness goes away and then it's awesome and really does give some volume.  I also like that it dries really quickly, especially compared to some other mousses.  I would purchase it again after I used some of my other similar products up.
Salon Grafix Invisible Spray Dry Shampoo - Love this stuff!

And now makeup and skin care.

Top Care Makeup Remover Wipes X2 - My favorite makeup wipes!  So gentle and inexpensive.
Dollar General Makeup Remover Wipes - Leftover from my summer travels.  Good for the price and I like these ones for when I travel.
Carmex Lip Balm - My favorite lip balm for over fifteen years.  Moisturizes your lips and adds some shine.
Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black - Favorite mascara ever.  The writing is worn off the tube from all my use.
Equate Eye Lifting Serum - A good under eye serum.  I go back and forth between this and the Up and Up brand, depending on whether I'm at Target or Walmart when I run out.

Work Stuff Haul

I picked up some things this weekend to take to work.

1. trash can - for under my desk
2. big lime green blanket - because my office is freezing and the blanket I had there isn't big enough.  Last week the thermostat in one of the rooms connected to our office read 55 degrees Fahrenheit.  Something is wrong with the air in that room and it leaks into our office like an arctic wind.
3. Penguins fleece sweatshirt - My mom gave me this sweatshirt for Christmas but I don't wear it much because it's pretty big on me, even after I shortened the sleeves.  However, it's perfect to wear over top of my work clothes, since it's  a little baggy.  I plan to keep it at work for an extra layer when needed.
4. Palmolive dish soap - I bought this small bottle to keep in my office to wash out my coffee/cocoa mug.
5. Barissimo Hazelnut Coffee K-Cups - Nothing like a hot cup of coffee to warm you up when the air conditioning is working over time.  These ones are from Aldi and cost about half of what most other brands cost but taste just as good.

Weekend Hair & Makeup

This long weekend has been so so nice.  I was really feeling pretty beat up from the past few weeks of work.  It has been great to sleep in, be lazy, and get some things done around the house that desperately needed attention.  I feel ready to go back to work tomorrow and conquer the world!  Or at least survive until Friday when we get paid again.  Hubby and I already have big plans for some Kohl's cash usage and some burrito consumption.

Last week I gave a bit of a sneak peak at my new hair cut.  For the last five months or so, I've been gradually going shorter and shorter as I attempted to find a lower hairstyle that was low maintenance, looked cute, and still felt like "me".  I think I'm finally getting closer.  This length just behaves well for me.  I also like that I can straighten and style it in about three minutes or if I want to put in a little more effort, I can do a cute wavy style with about seven minutes of time.

Also, let's talk about the makeup I'm wearing in these photos.  On the weekends, if I'm not going anywhere for the day, I tend to go with a lot less makeup.  Because some times I just need to be lazy.  In these photos, I'm wearing:
1. Pixi Brightening Peach Correction Concentrate (undereye to hide my always dark circles)
2. L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Powder in n1: Soft Ivory
3. N.Y.C. High Definition Liquid Eyeliner in Extra Black
4. Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black
5. Carmex Lip Balm

I've been experimenting with doing a bolder black liquid eyeliner with little other eye makeup (think Lauren Conrad but less dramatic).  It's not really going so well though.  I have no problems with lining my right eye but I feel like I'm fumbling with my left one since I'm right handed.  Then even if I give it time to dry, I end up smudging the liner when I curl my lashes.  Or I smudge it later by rubbing my eyes.  I think I'm just a pencil liner kind of person.  I guess some times being Experimental Beauty is also about finding out what doesn't work for me.  :)

Hair Evolution

I got my hair cut again this weekend and the stylist and I were kind of joking about how for the past few months, every time I would come in I would get my hair cut a little shorter.  I thought it would be fun to show a sort of hair evolution with a little sneak peek of my new (even shorter) hairdo.  I didn't really have time today to take a bunch of pictures so I'll have to try to get a better picture tomorrow morning or maybe do an outfit photo or something.

I love that this new hair cut is a length that is really low maintenance for me.  My hair is naturally straight and well behaved at this length.  If it's much longer, it tends to flip out every which way and do crazy things, which probably looks fine to other people but on my hair, it was driving me nuts.  If I have to spend more than about ten minutes a day total on my hair, I get annoyed.  More than ten minutes and I feel like my hair should look fancy, not just done.  How much time do you usually spend on your "every day" hair look?
