Friday Fun

Today I went to work.  Not so exciting.  I wore this:

Exciting because I love this outfit!  I wear it all the time but I just feel so good in it!

Very exciting: Tijuana Flats for dinner followed by some shopping!  Hubby and I went to a local teacher store to pick up some supplies that I wanted for next school year.  Next week I have a teacher planning day and I plan on totally cleaning and reorganizing my classroom closet.  If you can't see from the background of the photo above, it's getting really cluttered and messy!  I'm very obsessive about keeping my classroom organized and it desperately needs some help right now.

After the teacher store, we did some other fun shopping at Target and J.C. Penney.  I need a new purse because my current one was a cheapo from Walmart and is ripping at the handles.  I didn't find anything but we'll go out tomorrow and shop a bit more.  But I did find some other stuff!

My gray cat Isabella is modeling some fun teacher purchases!  I picked up four rolls of colored Bordette bulletin border in violet, orange, brite blue and nile green.  I also bought four rolls of Mavalus tape, which is the only kind of tape I'm allowed to use in my classroom because it doesn't ruin the walls.  The big blue box is to hold charts and large classroom decorations.  The smaller green and blue box holds bulletin border once it's unrolled or if it comes in flat strips.  On the end of that box are three packs of erasers.

These six packs of erasers were each only $1.00 from Target.  They had several other types but I decided to go with one pack of bone erasers and two packs of dice erasers.  I use these in my treasure box as a behavior and homework incentive.  The dice erasers have been a big hit in the past.

Post and Run

So much to do!  This is a post and run today.  It's been a long and busy day and I am so tired and ready to just snuggle up and go to sleep!  Just wanted to share my outfit and update my getting ready fast goals!

Jeans for me!  My boss said we can wear jeans for pretty much the rest of this school year and I'm going for it!  They are also quick and easy to throw on in the morning and get out the door faster.  With jeans and all my other adjustments, I was able to get out the door twenty-five minutes early again today!  I set my goal yesterday at fifteen to twenty minutes early, so I not only met but exceeded my goal!  Tomorrow's goal is fifteen to twenty minutes again!  Wish me luck!

Shopping My Stash for a Busy Week

Last night, I was mentally running through my upcoming week of work when I began to realize this was going to be a busy one. Next week is my last week of work before summer, so I have a ton of paperwork I need to get done this week in order to close out the school year. Additionally, I need to get my classroom cleaned and purge a lot of stuff from my closet. That means I'm going to need to work some extra hours either before or after my contracted hours. So the faster I can get ready in the morning, the earlier I can get to work and get started and the less time I'll have to stay after work when I'm exhausted. Time to shop my stash!

I picked out a few neutral blushes that are easy to apply and some eye shadows that worked well as singles, meaning that one shadow on the lid is all you really need. I'll probably keep all the rest of my makeup very quick and simple: a sweeping of foundation powder, mascara, and sweat proof eyeliner. Even with today being the first day back after a long weekend and hitting the snooze when I usually don't I was still ready five minutes earlier than usual.  Tomorrow I'm  shooting for twenty minutes early!  Below are the blushes and shadows I picked out to use this week.

Maybelline Mineral Power Blush in Original Rose
Essence Silky Touch Blush in Babydoll
Physician's Formula Talc Free Mineral Blush in Natural Flow
Elf Studio Blush in Candid Coral (hit pan on!)

Eye shadows:
L.A. Colors 12 Eye Shadow Palette in Traditional
Wet N Wild Trio in Walking on Eggshells
Wet N Wild Single in Nutty

Pasty Pale Legs

I'm just going to be honest here and admit that I have some pasty pale legs.  And with multiple days this week in the 80s and even touching the 90s, I was showing off those pasty legs in skirts, capris, and even shorts.

A little more honesty here.  People tell me that I need to tan or use tanning spray or gradual tanner or bronzer or whatever judgmental browning agent you can name.  To be honest, I'm too busy and lazy right now to care.  And why should I change who I am?  It really doesn't bother me, just other people.  Whatevs.  I am who I am and I'm too busy working right now to care about what color my legs are.

Green Smoothie

My husband and I have been trying to find fun and interesting ways to incorporate more vegetables and fruits into our daily meals.  Today, we tried our first green smoothie.  I have to say, it was delicious!!  Seriously, I felt like I was drinking a sneaky dessert.  This was yummy, cold, and a little sweet.  Recipe is below!

- 1 frozen, precut banana
- 4-5 large frozen, precut strawberries
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1 cup skim milk
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon
- baby spinach (I added it in last and filled the blender to the brim.)

Blend on low speed until green and well blended.

Inspired to Eat Healthy

This school year has been a bit dramatic at our household.  If you've been a reader for awhile, then you may have read my posts from back in November when we had a pretty serious scare with my husband Brian's health.  Luckily, it was nothing too terribly serious.  He has gastroparesis, which basically means that because of his diabetes, his stomach takes longer than normal to digest food, especially at night.  He started taking insulin around Thanksgiving and that helped, but still didn't eliminate that problem.  Then I saw this pin, and I was inspired.  This big healthy lunch looked delicious and I began thinking that maybe if I sent Brian to work with something similar, then neither of us would be so tempted to eat a big junky dinner.  I had no idea that this little pin would change so much.

I used to just throw whatever into my lunchbox for the next day.  The less I had to think about it and work to make it, the better.  Most days Brian wouldn't eat lunch at all or if he did, it was just saltines or some rice or whatever was easy to take to school.  And I didn't even think I liked vegetables.  But then I remembered that as a kid I used to love raw vegetables and fruit and I started thinking that the lunch in the pin looked way better than anything I was eating.  So I decided to start packing us healthy lunches with lots of raw veggies.  I can actually document the first day of our "healthy eating" lifestyle change.  I posted this picture to my Facebook page on April 21st.  Little did I know it would change everything.

The crazy thing is that once I started eating just one meal a day that was healthy, I got sort of addicted.  After a few weeks I started to realize that I really liked these foods.  Raw cucumbers, green peppers, salad, baby spinach, grapes, strawberries and more.  And the more I ate of these foods, the better I felt and the more healthy I wanted to eat at every meal.  It's now been almost exactly a month, and this is what my grocery store purchases look like now.

We have here baby spinach, carrot coins, bananas, granny smith apples, strawberries, green peppers, cucumbers, and spinach and herb wraps.  I have more energy than ever before.  After a day of work, I finally don't feel exhausted.  Now that Brian is eating earlier in the day, he sleeps at night so I can sleep too.  I want to eat healthier and I feel physically better than I have in years.  There are so many benefits that I can't even list them all.  And Brian has finally gotten on board with me and is also eating healthier.  This has truly turned into the start of a life change that I am really excited about.

I do want to clarify however, that we are not going to any extremes with it.  We still have pizza for dinner but now we eat half as much pizza and half of our dinner is also vegetables like a salad.  Instead of snacking on Goldfish crackers at work, I bring carrots, cucumbers, grapes, or other healthy vegetables and fruits.  But I still have a little piece of chocolate with my lunch.  All things in moderation, but adding in more fresh produce to my daily meals has really made a difference.

Below, I have one of my current favorite lunch items to share with you: cucumber & spinach wrap.  On the right is mine and the left is a vegetarian option for Brian.  Both wraps start out with a spinach and herb wrap.  Next, I spread on a bit of 1/3 fat garden veggie cream cheese.  On the right wrap, I added a bit of hard salami.  Both wraps were then topped off with cucumbers and baby spinach.  Wrap it up and eat it up!  Just one more way to add some more vegetables to your meal.

The Two Dressings

Today I'm sharing two different meanings of the word dressing. #1 the act of a person or thing that dresses #2 a sauce for food.

I'm wearing one of my very favorite outfits, my purple vest and jeans!  I added in my leopard flats to make the outfit a little more fun.

And the other dressing is a homemade lemon balsamic that I whipped up for my dinner tonight!  It was something different and yummy!  The recipe is below.

Lemon Balsamic Dressing
2 ½  tbsp fresh squeezed lemon juice (more or less depending on your preference)
1 ½ tbsp balsamic vinegar
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
Pinch of ground black pepper
Pinch of sea salt

This makes about enough for two large salads.  You can double the recipe to make more.

Disco Ball Shoes

These shoes sparkle like a disco ball in the sun! All the little gems give off a nice light and add a little happiness to a long day of work. I had math team practice after school again today and didn't get home until late. Story of my life this week! Definitely not looking forward to getting up at 5 AM and working for free on Saturday either. Is it summer yet?

Bare Legs and Bare Toes

Today is the first day in 2013 that I have shown my bare legs or my bare toes!  In other words, a skirt without tights and open toe shoes.  As a sidenote, to avoid the discomfort of chub rub on my thighs (and also to feel more secure as a teacher on the floor with my students), I always wear either tights with my skirts or bike shorts underneath.  (Like this pair from Walmart.)  I have two pairs right now, a black pair and a white pair that I bought from Body Central last year.  They are satiny and super comfy!

I also wore my sandals with newly pedicured toes!  The pink color is Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Fuchsia Power.  The minty dots were made by hand using a Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen that hubby got me for my birthday.  I think the shade is Green but I'm not sure.

Work Clothes & Dissecting Frogs

(If you don't want to see the dissected frog, don't scroll all the way down!)

Another busy day! I worked today, then had math team practice afterwards, and then stopped by the grocery store. I think I'm going to bed early tonight!

Today's outfit is a pair of brown trousers and a bright coral top, both from Kohl's. I rolled up the sleeves on this long sleeve shirt and I really like how it looked that way! Plus it kept my sleeves clean while I helped my fifth graders dissect bullfrogs! They had a blast!  Can you tell?  Science is fun!

Busy Week Mish Mash

This is going to be a busy work week for me!  You may know that I am the Math Team Coach this year and our competition is on Saturday.  That means extra practices this week and extra hours of work, in addition to a lot of other fun stuff going on at work.  Also, I have to work a six hour day on Saturday, with no extra pay, followed by going straight to my best pal's son's birthday party.  And I have to get up at 5:00 AM Saturday in order to be there on time.  Gah.  So posts will probably be random and short this week.  Rather than analyzing each outfit, I thought I would just share a mish mash of my days with some fun stuff added in.  Below is the outfit I wore on Friday of last week for our walking field trip to the Traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall.  So cool!  I didn't take any pictures while there and I really wish I had!  I was too busy being a teacher to be a tourist.

Field Trip Outfit
And next is what I wore today.  You've seen the exact same outfit here before.

And finally, we have today's super fun activity at work!  My fifth graders and I have been talking about the importance of nutrition and eating healthy foods.  After talking with a coworker, she offered to use her club's funds for my students to grow some herbs and vegetables, courtesy of our school's Green Team garden program.  Today we planted spearmint, eggplant, sweet bell peppers, and tomatoes in a grow box outside of our building.  My students were so excited to plant them and they can't wait for everything to start getting bigger!  Here's our little piece of terra.

Fashion Adventure: Even Bloggers Have Bad Hair Days

I was inspired by this post by Fran, whom I adore.  She was discussing how bloggers sometimes feel pressure to be perfect and that it's kind of nice to just show the real you sometimes.  I completely agree so today I'm sharing what happens after the photos - a bad hair day.  As you can see above, my hair started out okay.  I took my pictures and could have left it at that.  But right after taking these, I had to run a bunch of errands all around campus at work.  It was very early in the morning and warm and humid and by the time I got back to my classroom, I was looking like a hot frizzy mess.  At work and too busy to fuss with my hair, I grabbed a clip and made the best of the situation.  I snapped one quick picture to share just for proof.  But even bloggers have bad hair days.  After all, no one is perfect!

The Pieces:
1. petite plaid shirt from Kohl's
2. brown bead necklace from Walmart
3. petite dark wash bootcut jeans from Loft Outlet
4. brown knot flats from Rack Room Shoes

1. fit
2. comfortable
3. flattering
4. fun colors & pattern

1. Not sure how I feel about this shirt with brown accents.  I think I like it better with my honey colored flats but I don't hate this either.

Fashion Adventure: Grocery Store Run Ins

I had to stop by the grocery store again today and this time, I ran into my friend and her son!  Yesterday I wrote about how I saw her father-in-law at the store so I guess this makes two outfits that I can't rewear next weekend at her son's birthday party.  Tomorrow I can not stop at the grocery store after work because I really want to wear that outfit to the birthday party of my favorite four year old sprout!

The Pieces:
1. petite peacock 3/4 button down from Kohl's
2. chain and faux pearl necklace from Body Central Outlet
3. petite medium wash bootcut jeans from Loft Outlet
4. pewter bow flats from Bass Outlet

1. Good fit
2. Comfortable
3. Flattering

1. I guess the only thing I would say is that in these pictures, the shirt and jeans are looking very similar in color.  In real life, they aren't quite so similar but I generally prefer a little more contrast in my outfits.

Fashion Adventure: Weekend Wear

As I mentioned yesterday on my Facebook page, my principal is allowing the teachers to wear jeans every day this week as part of our Teacher Appreciation Week.  So it's a nice chance to show some outfits that I would wear on the weekends.  This outfit is a perfect example of something I would wear outside of work for shopping or a casual date.  I actually liked this outfit so much that I was thinking I might wear it next weekend to the birthday party of one of my good friend's son.  Except that I stopped at the grocery store after work today and ran into her father-in-law so I guess I'll have to find a new outfit to wear!  :-P Maybe tomorrow's outfit will be the winner!

The Pieces:
1. petite hot pink camp shirt from Ann Taylor Outfit
2. sparrow pendant necklace (don't remember where it's from)
3. petite dark wash bootcut jeans from Loft Outlet
4. pink floral flats from Rue21

1. Oh hey, there's my figure!  Remember how yesterday's outfit swallowed up my shape?  Not today!  I felt slim and small in this outfit and I was glad to be seen out in public by someone I know in this outfit!
2. And, as usual, because the pieces fit well (and don't have stupid random elastic at the bottom) and were comfortable.  No tugging and yanking on this outfit!
3. I love the added whimsy of the fun shoes and pretty bright pink top.  I feel like these pieces really show my fun and bubbly personality.

Fashion Adventure: I've Decided

I've decided I don't like this shirt.  At all.  I kind of hate it.  A lot.  After it gets washed, it's going to the donate pile.  I don't feel bad about it, since it was only about $6.  I tell you all the reasons why I hate it below.

The Pieces:
1. black tank top from Target
2. petite black chiffon keyhole blouse from Sears
3. bracken fern artist cardigan from Target
4. faux pearl necklace from Body Central Outlet
5. petite medium wash bootcut jeans from Loft Outlet
6. black bow flats from Bass Outlet

1. These jeans are comfortable and fit well.  Yea.... that's it.

1. This shirt is so unflattering.  It  has elastic threads at the bottom so it widens me across the midsection as well as giving the illusion of a belly sticking out over my jeans.  Considering one of the areas I like to flatter is my small waist, this shirt does nothing to accentuate that.  It somehow does the opposite.
2. The same crummy elastic at the bottom caused the shirt to ride up all day long.  I spent the whole day yanking this stupid thing down and it was so uncomfortable, feeling like my plumber crack was hanging out because of the shirt riding up.  I thought maybe I could make this shirt work by tucking it into a skirt but then it kept bunching up and looking like a weird lump under the skirt.

3. This shirt is a little low cut in the first place and with the added keyhole, it would be rather revealing if I hadn't worn a modest tank top under it.

Fashion Adventure: Staying Dry Outfit

Crazy weekend!  It's been raining nonstop since Thursday morning and if you saw my Facebook post last night, it was some severe weather here!  Floods, trees down, tornadoes forming.  I wore this outfit on Friday to work so I would stay dry and warm and on Saturday, I wore the same thing but with a white T-shirt underneath when we went to get new tires on Brian's car.  (P.S.: This outfit is totally inspired by Leonard from The Big Bang Theory!)

The Pieces:
1. black tank top from Target
2. petite white zip up hoodie from Kohl's
3. purple utility vest from Body Central Outlet
4. petite medium wash bootcut jeans from Loft Outlet
5. black bow flats from Bass Outlet

1. Dry!  With the hood for my head and the pleather of the shoes, my feet and hair were dry all day.  These shoes actually do an amazing job of keeping water out, unlike tennis shoes would.
2. Comfort.  All the pieces again fit well so they are comfortable and warm enough for the frigid rain that seemed like it would never stop coming down.
3. Flattering.  The tie in the waist of the vest keeps all these layers from looking too bulky on me.

1. I wasn't too terribly crazy about the black tank top with this.  It just seemed too close to the color of the vest.  Maybe gray would have been better.  On Saturday, I wore this same thing with a white T-shirt and I liked that better.

Fashion Adventure: Quick

I'm going to make this a quick post.  I had an after school activity today so I'm getting to this post late already plus I need to go shower so I can be ready to watch the new episode of The Big Bang Theory at 8:00.  :)  Yea for it being almost Friday!

The Pieces:
1. petite chambray button down from Kohl's
2. brown and white polka dot skirt - made by me!
3. faux pearl and chain necklace from Body Central Outlet
4. sheer nylons
5. honey bow flats from Bass Outlet
6. cognac cinch elastic belt

1. I love the way this outfit gives an hourglass shape.  The A line skirt and belted waistline balance out the top half.
2. This outfit is very comfortable because everything fits well.
3. I love how the neutral colors work together without being boring.
4. I really like how this skirt came out.  The polka dots are super cute and this skirt could be dressed up like this for work and worn very casual for the weekends as well.
