Small Avon Haul

It's been about ten years since the last time I ordered anything from Avon so I didn't want to go overboard with my first purchase.  I just picked up three things.

The first thing is the Ideal Shade Concealer Stick in the shade Fair.  I really like this concealer. It doesn't have the best lasting power but it's super easy to apply and covers dark circles as well as blemishes.  I find the lasting power on blemishes to be better than dark circles.  I think this is a great on-the-go product to toss in your purse for touch ups, and at $3.99, why not??

Next, I purchased a "mini" size of the GlazeWear Shine Lipgloss in Darling Pink.  I'll admit, I only purchased this because it was $0.99.  What a waste of money!!  It's sooo tiny that I've only used it for two days and I already can't get anymore product out of the container.  The lip gloss shade and texture are great so save your dollar and splurge on the full size instead.

Last, I purchased the 8-in-1 Eye Palette in the shade Neutral Tones.  If you are looking for a very natural palette, this is a great buy.  It was only $5.99 and you get eight super quality eyeshadows.  They are a mixture of matte, satin, and shimmer and they apply like butter.  The only downfall is that there is only one contour shade and it's really not that dark.  But I think it's worth the money if you like natural looks.  I've used it almost everyday for the last two weeks, in combination with a darker matte brown shadow in the crease.  Overall, a great buy!

Have you tried anything from Avon lately?  Were there any products that stood out to you?

Money Saving Solution: Pressed Powders

The outside ring

It drives me crazy when I hit pan on a pressed powder and it becomes practically unusable.  The worst is when you get to that little outside ring and even your brush can't access the product anymore.  Since my new favorite pressed powder is a bit on the pricey side (Physician's Formula Healthy Wear Powder Foundation SPF 50 runs around $14.99), I decided to come up with a money saving solution.

At Dollar General, you can purchase two of these little travel containers for pills for only $1.00.  That's a fifty cent solution!  Then I took the handle of a makeup brush and broke out the little outside ring of powder and put it in the container.

Using the back of my powder brush, I crushed the powder into a "loose" powder that I can now use until every little bit is gone.  Now more powder going to waste!

Compare the size to a nickel.

Manicure Monday: Savage

This manicure is layering gone wild!  But I think it turned out really cute and fun.  I started with two coats of Sinful Colors Savage.  I found the brush to be a nightmare of floppy awfulness.  It splayed out and gave far too much for my preference.  Despite the limp brush, this polish applied very well in only two coats.  It is a matte teal shade but unfortunately, no matter how I tried, I could not accurately capture the shade on camera.  In real life, it is much more teal.  Don't mind the mess... I wanted to capture the shade without any layering.  Also, it shows just what a problem that brush gave me!  (Normally I can paint my nails without too much paint on the skin.

Base coat and Savage
On top of this, I put on one coat of Sally Girl U Glow Girl.  In addition to being a fun glow in the dark color, this shade added just a hint of shimmer to this matte shade, which I enjoyed.  I followed that up with a funky star sticker on the ring fingers and a coat of Seche Vite Top Coat.  So fun!

The most color-accurate photo I could get... still not teal enough!

Base coat, Savage, U Glow Girl, Top Coat
But even with all that's going on here, I still got bored after the third day of wear.  Yes, that's right... this Sinful Colors polish lasted THREE days with very minimal tip wear.  I was impressed, considering I got this polish on sale for $0.99 AND it's matte!  To satisfy my boredom, I added a coat of Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Teal-y Cool, which is a light teal jelly with glitter.  I loved this even more, but alas, I think it was too many layers of polish because even with another SV Topcoat, it started to chip and wear quite a bit the next day so I took it off.  Overall, I loved the look of this and my students thought it was one of the neatest manicures I've worn so far this year.  (For some reason my fifth grade students are fascinated by my manicures!)

Added on Teal-y Cool
I should also add that some (not all) of my nails were stained by that blue shade.  Not sure why it wasn't all of them but I recommend using two coats of a base coat (I use Bonder by Orly) to prevent staining if it's something you worry about.

My Tried and Trues

Do you ever find yourself reaching for the same products almost every day because they just work well?  I certainly do and I thought I would share them with you.  These are all products that are tried and true for me and which always leave me wondering... why do I try products other than these when I know these work for me?  I'll never know!  Anyway, here are my tried and trues and some reasons why I trust each one to get the job done.

From left to right:
* Hard Candy Sheer Envy Face Primer - I love this inexpensive primer!  The squeeze tube allows you to get every bit out of it and it's easily accessible at Wal*Mart.  Also does a great job of smoothing my skin before primer and doesn't break me out!
* Hard Candy Glamoflauge Concealer in Light - This is an amazing concealer for the price!  FULL coverage and you only need a drop!  Nothing conceals better for me!  Works on dark circles very well but can also be used on blemishes.
* N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder in Sunny - One of the most inexpensive, easily accessible matte bronzers on the market!  I use this to contour my cheekbones.
* Physician's Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50 Bronzer in Fair - Along with the benefit of an SPF 50, this is a great bronzer for light skin.  It's one of the only bronzers I can use all over my face without looking dirty, orange, or too dark.
* Too Faced Shadow Insurance - Shadow Insurance is more expensive than what I would normally pay for makeup, but you only use a drop and it makes a huge difference for me!  It's one of the only eye primers that doesn't crease on my super-oily eyelids and it makes eyeshadows more true to life on my eyes.  And that one tube has lasted me nearly a year!
* Pixi Brightening Peach Correction Concentrate - Again, slightly more pricey than my normal choices but this undereye dark circle corrector is the ONE makeup item I can't live without.  You read correctly!  My dark circles always made me look tired and older until I found this product!  Like TFSI, I've had this for nearly a year and am just getting down towards the bottom of the jar.
Physician's Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50 Powder Foundation in Translucent Light - Again, SPF 50 but this powder is more than just sun protection!  It is a lightweight, full coverage, powder and the shade actually matches my skin very well!  I definitely recommend this product to anyone who wants a full coverage powder that doesn't feel heavy or cakey.
* Essence Lash and Brow Gel Clear Mascara - This inexpensive clear gel holds eyebrows in place without flaking off and making brow dandruff.
* e.l.f. Mineral Eyeshadow Primer - I actually use this primer to prep the undereye area for corrector and concealer.  It's inexpensive and helps corrector or concealer to apply with less tugging at the delicate skin around the eyes.
* Maybelline Define-a-Brow Pencil in Medium Brown - This twist up brow pencil always maintains a sharp, defined point.  No wasting time and money on pencil sharpening!  I also love that the comb is right there on the pencil - no separate tool required.
* Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Washable in Classic Black - Oh how I love this mascara!  I used the washable for everyday wear most of the year (waterproof can be more damaging to the lashes) and it holds a curl and makes my lashes look thicker and longer without ever clumping or looking spidery.
* Maybelline Colossal Volum' Express Washable in Glam Black - I use this mascara in the summer to prevent smudging when I sweat.  I also use this if I just want my lashes to look their very best!  Holds a curl like nobody's business!
* e.l.f. Mechanical Eyelash Curler - I couldn't get those great curled lashes without this awesome $1 lash curler!  My lashline runs wide so regular lash curlers pinch and rip out the outer corner.  Ouch!  This curler's base is extra wide to accommodate my long lash line without ripping out or pinching my lashes!

FYI: I bought all of these products with my own money.  No company or person sponsored me, asked me to review these products, or gave them to me.  Honest opinions only!

Do you have any Tried And Trues that you love?  I'd love to read about your go to products and maybe give some a try!

Manicure Monday: Time to Shine

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Time to Shine is a gorgeous shade for fall.  It's a metallic foil-rific bronze shade.  I believe it's also limited edition so if you're thinking about picking this one up, don't think for too long.  When I got this one home I realized it was quite similar to Wet N Wild Craze Nail Polish in Shield, which I think has sadly been discontinued.  I gave that shade away when I bought this one so I can't do a comparison but I will say if you loved Shield and can't get ahold of it now, this may satisfy your lemming.  It was opaque in two coats for me but with better skills, you could probably do one thick coat.  Application was a breeze with this polish and required virtually no clean up for me.  (I'm not one of those people who acetone the cuticle area for a perfect line.  I'm more just trying to paint only my nail and not my skin.)

Day 1 of Wear
I added a cute maroon flower sticker for some pizazz and I really liked the way this turned out.  This wore quite well too and you can see that after five days, there is only some tip wear.
Day 5 of Wear
On day 6 I had a barbeque to attend and no time to completely repaint my nails so I decided to cover the tip wear with a French tip sort of look.  I used Maybelline Express Finish in Racing Rubies.  I liked the way it turned out in theory.  In practice, my painter's tape didn't make the best or straightest of lines.  Also, after about five minutes of wear, (no exaggeration) that Maybelline polish was chipping and wearing.  Boo.  I don't think I did a very good job on my top coat.  Oh well, it was good enough for a few hours of wear until I took it off and started over.

Manicure Monday: Sew Psyched

This manicure was actually from last week... I'm currently a week behind which gives me some leeway if I skip a week.  I never planned on this Manicure Monday becoming a weekly thing but I figured if I'm painting my nails anyway, I might as well put some photos up to share.

The Essie website describes this shade as "a cashmere soft sage-pewter" but I would describe it as an Army green.  I think it's beautiful but I may be swayed by the fact that it rather matches my eyes well.  I think it's a great creamy shade for fall and the application was fantastic but that was nothing compared to how well it wore!  I painted my nails with this on Monday and it lasted until Sunday with only minimal tip wear and I didn't even add a top coat every other day like I normally would.  Fantastic!  And if you notice on my index finger, there was a pretty bad smudge where I ran my fingernail against my braces while flossing when it was still a bit tacky - but even the smudge and nick didn't get any larger throughout the week. That's amazing because I am really rough on my nails!  Can't rave about this polish enough!

Video: Walmart & Dollar Tree Haul

I ended my makeup diet on Friday and bought some items from Walmart & Dollar Tree.  I plan on taking about two weeks off from my makeup diet then will probably go back on it until the Holiday Limited Edition items start to come out.

Manicure Monday: Bubblegum Pink

I'm really not a big fan of pink nail polish.  I usually find it boring and predictable because everyone always wears pink (same applies for red).  So I'm a little surprised by how much I love this color.  It's pink but it's such a sweet pink.  Then when I realized that what I thought was a straight up creme actually had the finest of silver shimmer in it, I loved the shade even more.  This is the first Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear that I've tried and I was not disappointed.  This is three coats of pure heaven.  These photos were taken without any cleanup!  The brush is just the perfect size, shape, and stiffness for me to paint my nails without painting half my hand.  I will definitely be picking up some more from this polish line in the future!

For this first picture, I definitely recommend clicking to enlarge, as you can really see that silver shimmer in the bottle below my index finger.  Gorgeous!
