Target Haul

I picked up a few things while I was at Target yesterday that I am pretty excited about!

1. The brush on the left is a concealer brush from e.l.f. ($1) that I plan to use as a detail brush for things like highlighting the inner corner of my eyes.
2. The brush on the right is a Sonia Kashuk bent eyeliner brush ($5.99) that is used to apply cream, gel, or liquid eyeliner.
3. The blush is e.l.f. Studio Line ($3) and the shade is Fushia Fusion.  It's actually a nice shade of pink with large shimmer, almost glitter in it.  Not sure how I feel about the glitter yet!
4. From the e.l.f. $1 line, I purchased the eyeshadow quad in the shade Day 2 Night.  I am really looking forward to trying out this tutorial!
5. Finally, I picked up one of the e.l.f. Studio Cream Eyeliners ($3) in the shade Coffee.  I can't wait to try it out with the new eyeliner brush I bought!

Haul: New ELF Palette and Some Lipglosses

This video is a small haul of items I recently purchased, including one of the new elf palettes and some lipglosses.  I included some photos of the new e.l.f. Everyday Basics Palette, for those of you who are interested in a close up look at this new palette.

This palette is very similar to the e.l.f. 32 Palette that came out around Christmas of this year, which is a little disappointing.  However, I feel that some of the shades are better quality and the super bright shades in the original palette are a little more muted in this one.  Overall, I was a little disappointed that it ended up being SO similar to the palette I already had.

ELF Everyday Basics Tutorial

This look was one of my first attempts at putting together a look using the new e.l.f. Everyday Basics 32 Palette.  Overall, this palette would be a good option if you like neutral looks and don’t already have the original e.l.f. 32 palette.  This palette has a lot of the same shades as the original palette, although I do feel that the quality of these shadow has improved a bit.  The other difference would be that the row of brighter colors are different and slightly more muted.  Anyway, let’s get on with the step-by-step tutorial.

FACE:
1. The first step is to apply foundation primer.  I used Hard Candy Sheer Envy Face Primer and a cosmetic wedge to apply a thin layer of primer all over my face.
2. Next, I used the e.l.f. flat top powder brush to apply Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse Foundation in Porcelain Ivory.
3. Next I primed under my eyes using my e.l.f. Mineral Eyeshadow Primer.  This will prevent concealer from caking up and creasing.  I just used my finger for this step, as well as the next two steps.
4. I then applied Sally Hansen Fast Fix Concealer in All-Over Brightener to correct discoloration under my eyes.
5. I covered the corrector with a thin layer of Hard Candy Glamoflauge Concealer in Light.
6. I set all my face makeup with Maybelline Shine Free Loose Powder in Light.
7. Next I brightened my skin tone by using the e.l.f. Total Face Brush to apply Physician’s Formula Healthy Wear Bronzer SPF 50 in Fair.
8. Using an angled blush brush, I contoured my cheekbones using N.Y.C. Smooth Skin Bronzing Face Powder in Sunny.
9. I then applied e.l.f. Studio Blush in Candid Coral to the apples of my cheeks and back to my hairline.
10. For a highlight on my cheekbones, I used my Too Faced Absolutely Invisible Candlelight Translucent Powder.

LIPS:
1. To give my lips a slight bit of peachy color, I applied Wet N Wild MegaSlicks Lip Color Pencil in 675A: Peach Fuzz.
2. For shine and moisture, I added some N.Y.C. Kiss Gloss in Pink Lemonade over the lipstick.

EYES:

I numbered the shadows to make it easier to follow along with the tutorial.

1: Sonia Kashuk Blending Brush
2: e.l.f. Eyeshadow Brush
3: e.l.f. Eyeliner Brush
4: e.l.f. Defining Eye Brush
5: Studio Tools Crease Brush
6: Essence of Beauty Crease Brush
1. The first step is to prime the eyes for eyeshadow.  I used Too Faced Shadow Insurance.  I applied a very small amount to my index finger and gently pat the primer from the lashline to the browbone, into the inner corner, and under the lower lashline.
2. Next, I used my e.l.f. Eyeshadow Brush to pat on shade #12 from the e.l.f. Everyday Basics Palette all over the lid and into the bottom part of the crease.

3. Then I used my Essence of Beauty Brush to add shade #7 to the crease.  This will serve as a blending shade.  I used winshield wiper motions to apply the shadow in the crease of my eye.

4. Using the same shade on the e.l.f. Defining Eye Brush, I lined the bottom lashes from the outside edge to 2/3 of the way in.

5. Using the e.l.f. Defining Eye Brush, I picked up shade #15 and applied it to the outer corner of my eye.  This includes the outer 1/2 of the crease, as well as from the outside edge of the crease to the bottom corner of the eye.

Outer 1/2 of crease.

Connect to bottom corner of eye.

6.I then used shade #1 on my e.l.f. Eyeliner brush to highlight the inner corner of my eyes.
7. Using the Studio Tools Crease Brush, I blended all of the lid and crease shades so that the colors faded gradually and had no harsh lines.
8. The I used the Sonia Kashuk Blending Brush to apply shade #11 under the eyebrow as a highlight.  Then I used the same brush to apply shade #1 only under the arch of the brow.

9. Next I used my CoverGirl Perfect Point Plus Eyeliner in Espresso to line the waterline, then the top lashes.

Lining the waterline.

10. Next I took my e.l.f. Mechanical Eyelash Curler and curled my lashes.

11. Finally, I applied a coat of Revlon Grow Luscious Mascara in Black to my top lashes.

And here we have the finished look!  I hope you enjoy!

Bloopers, Outtakes, and Other Silliness

As I needed something to distract me from my mouth scraping against my braces, I decided to edit up a video for YouTube.  I've been saving the things I edit out of my videos for several months now, and I finally had enough to make a full video.  It cheered me up a bit.  So here it is, my Bloopers, Outtakes, and Other Silliness Video.

Ew

Braces are gross.  I felt something swirling around in my mouth, thinking it might be a piece of wax.  I took it out and it was a piece of skin.  Ew.  :(

Starvation Frustration

Teacher Planning Day!  No students today!

I woke up this morning with a dry mouth and an empty belly.  My braces were stuck to the inside of my top lip so I used my tongue to peel them off.  Ow!  Some skin came with them.  :(  And I had a POUNDING headache.  (Not sure if it's from the braces or not.)  It was so tempting to stay in bed!  Alas, I had to get up.  As my stomach growled, I realized I didn't really have anything to grab for breakfast that I could easily eat so I ended up eating a yogurt.  I didn't grab anything to bring with me to work, which was a serious mistake.  And even drying my face off after washing it hurt!  Boo.  I took some excedrin for the headache and tooth pain.  The headache went away, but not the pain in my mouth.

I got to work and headed up to the main office to show my boss my new smile.  She (along with several other people) said it's really not noticeable unless you are really close to me.  I saw lots of people throughout the day and most of them didn't notice until I said something.  Nice!  I had a full conversation with the head custodian and he never did notice.  Wonder how long it will take him to figure it out.  He had the fire extinguisher inspector with him, so I didn't bring it up.

I called the ortho and they said to come in at 12:20 and have that ligature fixed.  So I guess I'm only working half the day.  I spent most of the morning trying to get wax to stick to the hook on the back right side.  It was digging into my cheek but the wax kept sliding off.  I guess my teeth are too wet.  The bad thing is, it doesn't slide off in one nice chunk, but rather falls apart in my mouth so all day long I'm spitting out little bits of wax.  I feel like I've been chewing on candlesticks.

I spent the rest of the morning back and forth on the phone with the ortho, dentist, oral surgeon, dentist again, surgeon again, etc.  Tuesday is my oral surgeon consultation to remove the wisdom teeth and primary canines.

When I get to the ortho's office, the assisstant says I could have let the missing ligature go without being replaced, as long as several ligatures aren't missing.  Wish I had known that cause it hurt like HELL when she replaced it!!  Rather like someone punched me in the already bruised mouth.  I thought my mouth hurt before!!  Instant pain, but luckily it subsided in about 30 minutes.

I have had nothing to eat all day but that yogurt and a sugar free Jello that I happened to have in my fridge at work so on the way back from the ortho, I stopped at the grocery store and picked up pudding, jello, and MASHED POTATOES!!!  I pigged out on mashed potatoes and for the first time in 24 hours, I now feel slightly full!  Relief at last from my starvation frustration.  Now I have to go wax my hook again.  Argh, this stinks.  How long till these suckers come off????  Something like 729 days, if I'm lucky.

Dear Mashed Potatoes: I love you!!

Here It Is

Well, here it is.  The moment I was anxiously awaiting.  Turns out it wasn't that big of a deal.  Except I haven't seen anyone yet besides the people at the orthodontist's office.

Here are my thoughts on my past 24 hours.

Yesterday:
6:30 PM: Realize tonight will be the last time I floss my teeth without braces for a LONG time.
9:30 PM - 11:20 PM: Toss and turn, trying to sleep.  Can't sleep with my anxiety so I take some NyQuil.  Sleep at last.

Today:
5:15AM: Wake up for work, still exhausted.  Still anxious too.
7:15AM: Get to work.  Have a meeting.  Trying to distract myself.
10:15AM: Leave work to go home and eat my last solid lunch for a while.  Brush my teeth for the last time without braces then head to the ortho!!
11:30 Pay a whopping ortho fee then head back to get started.  They don't do any molds of my teeth or impressions, but they do take some photos.  Have to wait for another assisstant to finish using some equipment before they can start on me.  Boo!   Read World Without End to stay occupied.

Next they put some nasty stuff on my teeth and let it cure.  Not sure what it is.  Maybe an etching agent?
Then put more stuff on my teeth and let it cure.  The ortho comes in and gets started placing on the brackets.  I swear I can feel that weird blue light cooking my teeth!!  The brackets have trouble sticking to my teeth (apparently I have very narrow, petite teeth) so some of them have to be reapplied 4 or 5 times.  I start to get slightly worried.  I almost drown in my own spit at one point, as they forgot to suction me!  lol

Finally all the brackets are placed and the archwire is attached.  I am done!  They hurry me off, without even looking in the mirror, as it was lunchtime by then, but I have serious questions!!  Will I need expanders, elastics, spider, etc???  The short answer is they think not, but probably won't know for sure until teeth start moving.  I WILL have to get metal brackets on the bottom, after all.  :(  But that should be the only real metal in my mouth.

At first, my teeth don't hurt.  They just feel like a lot of pressure, as if they are all being squashed together in the front, although I'm sure that's not the case.

3:30 PM: My teeth are starting to hurt, especially the bicuspids on either side of the primary teeth.  I also have a headache but am not sure it is from my teeth.  Also, the hooks on 3 of my brackets are starting to snag on my inner mouth and irritate the skin.  Ouch.  I can't eat solid food for dinner because my teeth are too sensitive.  I eat some Cream of Wheats and ice cream but am still hungry.  After brushing, I realize I'm missing a ligature on my central incisor!  Already??  I'll have to call the ortho tomorrow.  I work on cleaning my house after dinner to distract me from my aching teeth.

6:00 PM: My teeth hurt even worse and so does my headache.  Take some advil but it doesn't help the teeth.  Try to eat some French fries, to no avail; my teeth are still hurting and the French fries get caught in my braces, as I try to use my central incisors to chew.  I feel so very much like my geeky high school self that I find myself smiling a bit.  I had forgotten about that part of me that was so much my personality years ago.  I post to Facebook that I feel like singing some Britney Spears into my hairbrush.  Memories.  It makes me kind of fond of myself, like an old friend.

8:00 PM: I am exhausted and struggling to stay awake and finish cleaning, as my mother is coming to visit me tomorrow.  Anyway, I have to go try and finish cleaning.  Can't wait to go to bed!  Hopefully my mouth won't keep me awake again!

Countdown to Adult Braces: TODAY

I'm about to go brush my teeth for the last time for TWO YEARS without braces.  I feel rather like vomiting.  NERVES!

Countdown to Adult Braces: TOMORROW!!! ACK!!!

Chips and Queso!!

When I got home from work today, my husband had somehow gotten home before me.  This hasn't happened recently.  Then he told me to go change because he was taking me out for dinner before I get my braces on tomorrow!  He took me to Tijuana Flats, one of my favorite Mexican restaurants.  I LOVE their chips and queso and have mentioned several times to him how much I will miss it when I have braces for the next two years!  I thought it was really sweet of him.

I snapped this photo on my phone of what I am calling the Last Supper Before Braces.

Before this week, I was excited and anxious.  Now I just feel nervous, nauseous, scared, apprehensive, etc., etc., etc......  I set up mobile blogging on my phone tomorrow so I can post as it happens.  We'll see how it goes!!

Countdown to Adult Braces: 2 Days

Last week, I decided to try to whiten my teeth a bit before I got my braces on.  I figured the braces would draw extra attention to my teeth and I didn't want the first thing everyone noticed to be my yellow teeth.  I picked up this kit from CVS for around $16.  I didn't have high expectations, but I am pretty happy with the results for what I paid.  I haven't used them this week, as I didn't want my teeth feeling too sensitive right when those braces were put on but I think they did a decent job for the inexpensive price.

Countdown to Adult Braces: 4 Days

I saw this awesome idea on ArchWired.com, a site for adults with braces.  They have a kit that you can purchase that has everything you would need for having braces on the go.  It runs around $30 and includes things like a travel toothbrush and collapsible cup, floss, dental picks, a mirror, and lots of other great things.  I thought I would save myself the money, since I already had most of the things I'd need and just make myself a kit.  I already had all of these things at my house, so the cost to me was $0.

The case is a makeup bag I already had from the brand Caboodles.  I like that it's clear so I can find things easily.

Contents:
- DenTek floss picks
- Sensodyne Sensitive Teeth Travel Toothpaste
- A full size toothbrush in a travel case
- a small mirror with magnifiying side ($1 at eyeslipsface.com or Dollar General Stores)

I am thinking I would like to pick up a few things to add.  The toothbrush I have is HUGE and I think I'd like a travel size one and maybe a collapsable cup too.  I'll probably also need to get one of those spiral braces interproximal toothbrushes too.  I'll wait and see what I can find on my next trip to the grocery store.

My Favorite Hair Products

Left: It's a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product
Right: Redken Hot Sets #22

This post is not about teeth or braces!  lol  It's about two hair products that I am in love with!!  These are both items that I have repurchased several times.

On the left, we have It's a 10 Miracle Leave-In Product, which I use every day, no matter how I style my hair.  It keeps me from getting split ends and makes my hair soft and manageable.  I SWEAR by this product.  It is the only thing that can keep my hair from getting split ends.  Also, the company is cruelty-free!  The photo below shows the 10 things this product claims to do and how to use it.  I love that you only have to put it in once!

The other product is Redken Hot Sets #22.  My hair is naturally straight and doesn't hold a curl for more than five minutes without loads of hairspray.  And loads of hairspray means hard, crunchy hair.  Not attractive!  But with the Hot Sets, my hair will hold a curl all day and it stays soft and touchable.

By the way, if you're wondering, no one paid me to say/write this.  I purchased these items (several times!) with my own money and truly love these products!  No sponsorship here!

Countdown to Adult Braces: 5 Days

While I was at Walmart today, I picked up a few things to help me keep up with my dental hygiene while I have my braces.  I know there are probably some more things that I will need to pick up but I thought this would be a good start.  I purchased an electric toothbrush, as I currently use a manual one and wanted something a little more intense.  The one I decided on was around $30.  It is the Oral-B Vitality Floss Action Rechargeable Toothbrush.  I also picked up some Oral-B Glide Pro-Health Comfort Plus Floss.  This is the floss I'm currently using and I really like it.  It is made almost like ribbon, thin and flat, as opposed to the traditional string-like floss.  This makes it slide really easily between teeth, even when teeth are crowded, and the floss doesn't shred and get stuck in tight places like other floss can.  I'm not sure how well the new toothbrush will work, and I might consult my orthodontist and see if they think it will be sufficient, but for now I'll just be getting used to an electric toothbrush.

Countdown to Adult Braces: 6 Days

I thought this website was really informative and helpful for adults thinking about getting braces or who are currently in treatment now.  There is also a chat room you can utilize.

Countdown to Adult Braces: 7 Days

Seven Days.  Only one week left until I get my braces.  I feel like I've been waiting for 11 years and I guess I have.  I always knew I'd have to have this done eventually.  Now I wonder why I waited so long.  But we can't change the past so why worry about it?  To commemorate my last brace-free week for a long time, I decided to make a YouTube video showing close ups of my teeth and pointing out the things that definitely need changed and some things I'm hoping they can fix while they're at it.

THIS VIDEO HAS BEEN REMOVED.

Countdown to Adult Braces: 9 Days

BEFORE photo: No photoshopping or editing

Edited with Microsoft Paint.  I wonder what the real after photo will look like?

Tooth Thoughts of the Day:
One of the girls that I work with needs braces as well.  She is getting them the same week that I am... probably one day after me!  It's so nice to not feel alone in this.  We were talking today about our upcoming fittings and so on and she mentioned that she had three separate appointments before her braces would be placed.  I am only scheduled for two.  (We've both already had our first appointment.)  She said hers were 1. the consultation 2. records and billing and 3. braces applied.  I got a little scared when she told me her ortho doesn't do records and applying the braces on the same day.  I got to thinking, 'What if mine doesn't either and I just got so anxious at the consultation that I thought they said that?'  I could be waiting a whole extra week before the braces go on!!  Ack!!  So I called my ortho to check.  They said that's how they usually do it, but since I am an adult (and I assume therefore have more patience?) they would do 1. the consultation (check!) and 2. the records and placing appliances in one appointment (March 17th).

I also wonder at what point will they know whether those adult teeth will come down or not?  How long will it take to know?  Do we have to try first and see or can they just do x-rays to tell?  I have too much time to think!  Any answers from someone who had the same thing done??
I think I'm just so anxious that I'm thinking of all these problems in my head that don't really exist at all.  To calm myself down, I tried to find some funny poems about braces.  Sadly, I had a hard time finding much but I did enjoy these two!

This one is about the social stigma that goes with braces: A Braces Poem

This one is about getting food stuck in your braces: The Battle of the Braces

Countdown to Adult Braces: 10 Days

Late last night, as I lie awake in bed, thinking about braces, teeth, and oral surgery, I realized that I have a Full Mouth Debridement (deep cleaning) scheduled with my dentist for April 1st and I got to wondering if I could even get that done with braces on my teeth.  After a quick call to my dentist, I was reassured that while it might be more difficult, it would still be possible.  However, they would prefer I swing by the orthodontist's office first and have the archwire removed, then reattached after my cleaning.  Do they even do that sort of thing?  It seemed slightly outlandish of the dentist to request that but it can't hurt to ask, right?  Even though my ortho and dentist are on completely opposite sides of town.  We'll see, as I have to work that day and am not sure how much time I will need to call off.

Countdown to Adult Braces: 11 Days

I just realized next week is Daylight Savings Time.  That means there is one less hour between me and my braces.  Exciting!  I found this YouTube video that is pretty interesting.  He was the same age as me when he had his braces put on.  He doesn't have the same problem that I do but the video is a neat idea.  He took a picture every day and then you can see the changes from beginning to end.
