Manicure Monday: Malt/Hannah Pinktana

I started out this manicure by painting my nails with two coats of Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Malt (I did use a base coat, even though the Salon Manicure brand alleges that you don't need to... hahaha.).  However, while I thought this color looked sleek and professional in the bottle, in actuality it looked boring and invisible on me.  Don't you hate that?  The application was great and dried fairly quickly.  The color is a very nice nude creme but just so blah on me.  (Sidenote: I swear my cuticles didn't look like that in real life!  Some things look creepy up this close!)

In sunlight, no topcoat added

This is a really nice, subtle look but I was rather bored with it and really wanted to jazz it up.  I just kept thinking about a manicure I had seen here, on Nouveau Cheap.  So I decided to steal Gianna's idea and add some Wet N Wild Fast Dry Polish in Hannah Pinktana on top.  I added one thick coat of Hannah Pinktana but later realized it was rather uneven, though only obvious in certain lights at certain angles.  But I still looooove the way this combination turned out!  Sooo cute and I love that the Malt eliminated any visible nail line that might have shown through with just the Hannah Pinktana.  I'm thinking Malt is going to be a great shade to use as a layering base!

Check out that sparkle!

Love this glitter!

Video: 3 Summer Hair Styles

I finally had the time and energy this week to film and edit a video!  This one is on my three favorite summer hair styles, which are also great styles for school.  They are all fairly easy to achieve and I outline what products I use for each look.  I hope you enjoy!

15 Weird Facts About Me

I saw this tag on Nouveau Cheap and thought it looked really fun!!

What's a nickname only your family calls you?
Family and a few close friends call me Pammy, as my first name is Pamela.

What's a weird habit of yours?
I don't really know if it's weird but if I break one fingernail, I have to cut them all.  I can't stand it when they aren't all the same length.

Do you have any weird phobias?
Again, not necessarily weird but I am rather afraid of snakes.  Spiders, roaches, lizards don't bother me but snakes... YECK!  And as a side note, I'm a teacher and have seen rattlesnakes on three different occasions while I was walking my class to and from places.  (I live in Florida and we have a campus at our elementary school where many of our "hallways" are outside.)  I have to stay calm and composed in front of the kids but inside I'm thinking 'RUUUUUUUUUUN!'

What's a song you secretly love to blast and belt out when you're alone?
Classic, always loved song by me:
Brave New Girl from In The Zone.

I'll be honest though... anything early Britney Spears.  She was my guilty pleasure in high school when she first came out.  But this song in particular, I really love.

A song I've been really loving this year: Who Says by Selena Gomez

Basically, I love super girly pop songs and anything Taylor Swift!!

What's one of your biggest pet peeves?
When teachers don't know which homophone to use!!!  For example, they might write "There going to be late if they don't hurry."  Really!?!?  TEACHERS who don't know the difference!  I could go on for hours.

What's one of your nervous habits?
If I have to be quiet, I play with or touch my hair and sometimes pick at my fingernails.  It could be my nail polish or cuticles.  If it's a situation where I can talk, I say stupid things.  I just talk too much when I'm nervous and end up making things awkward.  Basically, I'm an extremely awkward and clumsy person.  (Anyone seen this commercial??  SOOOO ME!)

What side of the bed do you sleep on?
Whichever side is closer to the bathroom!  lol

What was your first stuffed animal and its name?
My dad bought me a stuffed Panda bear at the hospital when I was born that had "Pammy" written on a pink T-shirt.  So Pammy the Panda Bear was my first stuffed animal (that I know of) but the one I slept with for years was called Poley the Polar Bear.  So creative.  :P

What's the drink you always order at Starbucks?
I hardly ever go to Starbucks but when I do, I want a flavored frozen frappuccino.  Usually whatever the seasonal special is or if that doesn't sound good then I'll go for the classic mocha frappuccino.  I like frozen because in Florida it's almost always warm enough for frozen!

What's the beauty rule you preach, but never actually practice?
I don't know what the "rule" is, but I always end up wearing way too much blush.  I put on my makeup at 5:30 in the morning and I only have artificial light to go by.  When I see it after the sun comes up I'm always shocked at how much blush I have on my cheeks.  It looked so good in the light of my makeup mirror!  But the good news is that blush tends to fade pretty quickly.

Which way do you face in the shower?
With my back to the water, unless I need water on that side.

Do you have any weird body skills?
I can make a whistling sound with my tongue.  It kind of sounds like when you blow over the top of a bottle.

What's your favorite comfort food thats 'bad', but you love to eat it anyways?
KFC-style fried chicken and mashed potatoes.  Or any kind of ice cream!!

What's a phrase or exclamation you always say?
I wouldn't say I have one phrase but I quote one-liners from Futurama constantly.  It's my favorite show ever and I watch it over and over on DVD, usually while I put on my makeup.  (I'm watching it now as I write this post!!)  There are tons of funny one liners for every occassion.  One of my favorites that describes me very well is something the character Leela once said, "I can be really impulsive.  It just takes me awhile!"  I linked the clip here if you want to watch it.

Time to sleep - what are you actually wearing?
A plain white Hanes or Fruit of the Loom men's T-shirt and shorts that have Elmo's face on the front and on the back they say "Tickle Me".  hehe

Pedicure: Snappy Sorbet

As I mentioned in yesterday's Manicure post, I also painted my toes a lovely shade of orange.  This was another Sally Hansen Insta-Dri formula, this time in the shade Snappy Sorbet.  I had the same problems with this formula.  Basically, it is hard to apply because it dries faster than I can apply it unless I apply a super thick coat, which then pools in the cuticle area.  Hate this formula but I really do love this color.  And I swear the streaks and bald spots aren't as obvious in real life when my feet are so far from my eyes.  There is a subtle shimmer in this shade that is just lovely, even though it's still not completely opaque after three coats.  I wish this shade came in the Xtreme Wear brand but I think this as well as the Lightening shade will work well for toes, where you can't see the imperfections as much.

Manicure Monday: Lightening

Fruit was the theme of my nail polish this week, thanks to my friend Melanie's suggestion!  On my toes, an orange shade and on my fingers, lemon!  Although the shade is called Lightening, it's a lovely bright yellow creme.  I was really drawn to these shades of Sally Hansen Insta-Dri nail polish for summer because they were both bright happy shades.

In the sunlight

This shade started out extremely streaky and uneven and I knew after the second thin coat that this was going to be a fight.  The area by my nail bed kept showing up bare, even after applying thicker layers of polish.  The same problem occured with the orange shade of Insta-Dri on my toes.  I ended up slathering on two more super thick coats of polish onto my fingernails for a total of FOUR coats.  Tedious!  But the real problem was the bald areas by my cuticle so I ended up practically painting my entire first knuckle to get the entire nail opaque.  I was extremely frustrated!!  I ended up with a nail bed mess but it's not that obvious in real life.  You can still see some little spots of polish that I need to clean up but at least the polish came off of my skin rather easily.  I will not be purchasing any further shades from this line.  But in the end, I was satisfied with the way it turned out.  Very pretty bright yellow that's great for summer but a pain in the neck to apply.

Nail Polish Wish List

My nail polish collection
If you couldn't tell by my recent post subjects, I am currently obsessed with nail polish.  It's been the topic of most of my posts for the past several weeks.  This is mainly because I'm currently on a makeup diet and nail polish is one of the only things I am allowing myself to buy, mostly because I didn't have that many.  Well that's all changed now!  I really should just give up on this makeup diet stuff and admit that I am a shopaholic and yes, I own more products than I will probably ever use in a lifetime but it's a collection thing (like stamps!) as much as a cosmetic thing.  Anyway, I am going to try to not buy anymore new polishes until I've used some of the ones I already have, as there are a lot that I've never used once yet.  So instead of buying, I've made a wish list of polishes I want to buy.  Of course, by the time I got around to posting this, I've bought several of the polishes on my list, but no worries!  I just added more.  lol

* Polishes with an asterisk (*) are ones I have purchased since starting this list.

Sinful Colors
*San Francisco
Cream Pink

Wet N Wild
Wild Shine:
*Dreamy Poppy
*Red Red
Lavendar Crème

Fast Dry:
*Hannah Pinktana
Party of Five Glitters
Blue Wants to be a Millionaire

Mega Last:
Private Viewing
Bite the Bullet
Club Havana
Heat Wave

Sally Hansen
Xtreme Wear:
Strobe Light
Mint Sorbet
*Bubblegum Pink
Mystic Lilac
Going Green
In the Spotlight

Demure Vixen

And.... any drugstore brand of flakies polish!  Any suggestions on ones that are available now?

What about you?  What polishes are on your wish list?

I Can Comment Again!!!

Thanks to another blogger's post, I was able to finally able to solve my computer problems after months of not being able to comment back to my readers!  For the longest time, I was having the same problem as ThatsSOfresh, that every time I would try to comment to a blog or comment on my own blog, my computer logged me out and wouldn't log me back in.  One of the comments on her post suggesting using a different browser software so I tried Firefox and BAM!  Problem solved!  I can comment again!  Needless to say, I am very happy and I am going to go through and reply to all those comments I have waiting for me!  :D

Manicure Monday: Park Ave

I made sure this week that I photographed my manicure before I managed to chip it to high heaven.  I used N.Y.C. In a New York Color Minute Nail Polish in Park Avenue.  It's what Nouveau Cheap would consider to be a "greige" shade; a mix between gray and beige.  It's sort of a dark taupe and I love it!  I think it's unique but still professional.  I had some real trouble applying this, as I really wasn't used to fast dry nail polish.  It's been quite a while since I used one and I found the thin coats that I normally use were drying before I could even get it across the entire nail.  After four thin coats, I finally figured out that I needed to use more polish.  Five coats later, I was really happy with the way it turned out.  No streaking and a nice cream finish!  I think you could also have easily applied 2 thicker coats and gotten good results, as the dry time is really quite fast, even for a thick coat of polish.  More research is needed, but so far I'm liking this.  After a full day of being really rough on my nails at work (lifting books, boxes, and packages and moving them and lots of typing), I only have some tip wear and a tiny chip on my index finger of my right (dominant) hand.  Not too bad for the $1.72 I paid for this polish at Target!  All photos were taken in indoor lighting, as it was dark when I painted my nails.  Also, please ignore the mess around my cuticles... I hadn't finished all of my cleanup yet.

On My Toes: Sinful Colors in Mint Apple

Last week (before my great computer meltdown), I had mentioned that it was Manicure Monday in my house and I was painting both my toenails and fingernails.  I never got around to photographing my nails before I removed the polish because I was so rough on them at work that day that it chipped to the point of nonrepair in less than 24 hours.  I guess I should have known better than to paint my fingernails the day before moving textbooks in and out of my closet at work.  *Sigh*  But my pedicure has lasted through the week and so I decided to share that with you.  It's the Sinful Colors polish in the shade Mint Apple, which I blogged about yesterday.  Can you tell I'm in love with aqua right now??  But I think maybe next week I'll change it up when I paint my fingernails again.  I'm thinking something in the orange or yellow family.  Why not go bright and fun while it's still summer?

This pedicure was three thin coats of polish.  I am a little disappointed though, because there are still some bare spots that you can see if you get up close.  Next time I'm thinking two thicker coats instead.  While I love this color, it makes me look so pasty!  Darn my porcelain skin!  Cool tones don't always turn out so well on me.  Oh well, love it anyway!

Cheaper Alternative

If you like unique shades of nail polish then there is a good chance you will take one look at Essie's Turquoise and Caicos and fall in love.  But if you're like me, you might not be as crazy about the $8 price tag that goes along with Essie nail polishes.  For me, that's just a little much for a nail polish.  But after weeks of lusting after that unique aqua shade, I had to give in.  And I must say, I love that shade!  It's so different from the usual shades of pink and red that you find in drugstore nail polishes.  Then not one week later I found a shade that is one fourth of the price and really similar!  I wouldn't call it a dupe, because they aren't identical, but if you're just looking for that same unique mix of green and blue polish, then this shade might satisfy your lust for Turquoise and Caicos without hurting your wallet as much.  That shade is Sinful Colors in Mint Apple.

Indoor lighting

Natural lighting
- Both are a unique shade of aqua; a mix of blue and green that leans more towards the green side.
- Both are available at the drugstore (Walgreens).

Natural lighting

- Mint Apple is a bit deeper than Turquoise and Caicos.
- Mint Apple is a shimmer finish while Turquoise and Caicos is a creme finish.

Indoor lighting

To be honest, I can't decide which one of the two I like better.  And when on my toes, I can't really tell the difference since it's so far away from my eyes.  Basically, if you're craving that unique aqua shade but aren't ready to drop eight bucks on a nail polish, Sinful Colors in Mint Apple might be a cheaper alternative that will satisfy your aqua lust.

Duck Hammer Computer

Does anyone else remember that old clipart of the duck in a business suit steadily poised with a raised hammer which he is about to take to a computer?  That's what I've felt like all week!  I'm not sure if I picked up a virus or what, but last Monday while perusing some fabulous nail polish blogs, I noticed my computer started freezing and crashing.  I do not believe this is at all the fault of the blog authors, just the fault of my crappy antivirus.  So after much crashing and freezing I managed to uninstall my old antivirus and install a new one.  For a few hours, my computer was back to running smoothly and I was hoping that my computer woes were over, as this was not good timing!  Tuesday was my first day back to work as a teacher after summer break and all of my lesson plans and much of my work is on my computer.  So it was, of course, the worst possible time for my computer to crash.  It couldn't have happened during the summer when I'm just using my laptop to keep me busy.  That would have been too convenient!  Grrrr!

So I managed to get a little work done and went to bed.  The next day, what do you know, my computer is back to crashing and freezing and the new antivirus can't even scan the computer without freezing!  This goes on for days with me trying to find a solution and spending hours on my computer getting nothing accomplished.  So finally, after five days of my computer making me angry beyond all belief, all I could see was that stupid angry duck in my head and I'm thinking how jealous I am that he can actually smash that computer and relieve his anger!!!  But it seems that now after uninstalling the new antivirus and installing yet another different antivirus, my computer is back to functioning normally.  For now, at least.  I'm thrilled that I was finally able to get my work done on my computer instead of borrowing hubby's.  And I'm hoping my computer will stay alive long enough to post this blog and attempt to edit a video for YouTube.  Finally, I am at peace with my computer friend again.  Today, I leave you with this mental image for all of us who deal with technology daily and know the frustration that it can cause.

Manicure Monday

Mani-Pedi Basket

Just another Manicure Monday!  Has anyone else heard the Manic Monday song by the Bangles?  I'm sure everyone has, but today as I painted my nails on the last day of summer for me (I go back to work tomorrow!), I kept hearing that song in my head but ManicURE Monday instead!  I'm weird, I know.  Anyway, my nails still need a lot of cleanup done before I show the world, so on this Manicure Monday I thought I would share the new mani-pedi basket that I put together a few weeks ago.  I have found myself painting my nails far more often lately, since I’m currently off work for the summer and this is handy for me.  I live in a two story townhouse and my nail polishes and supplies are stored upstairs but I almost always paint my nails downstairs.  Now I can toss in my nail polish color of choice, grab and go.  Here’s what I keep in it.

- Profiles Spa Nail Dryer Fan from Sally Beauty Supply (can run on batteries or the AC adapter cord)
- Nail Polish Remover
- Nail File
- Nail Buffer
- Orangewood Stick
- Plastic Cuticle Pusher
- Toe Nail Clippers
- Orly Bonder Base Coat
- Seche Vite Fast Dry Top Coat
- Hello Kitty Toe Separators

I've never been a huge Hello Kitty fan (I like her but am not obsessed, if that makes sense?) but who could resist those toe separators?  Pink with Hello Kitty and the separator part is shaped like a star?  Too cute!  But what I love most about this set is that the actual star shape is just the right size to separate my piggies!  There's nothing worse than toe separators that are painful to wear!  These ones are cute and comfortable and also came with a Hello Kitty mini nail clipper!  You can pick the set up at Target!

NOTD: Water Marbling

I am finally caught up with my Nail of the Day posts!  For awhile there I was several days behind because I was so busy!  And I am thrilled to share this look with you!  This technique is a really easy nail art design called water marbling.  Basically, you paint your nails white then drop nail polish into water and make a design in the polish.  Then you dip your nails into the water and the design sticks to your nails!  For more info, watch the video from Luxurious Nails that inspired me!  I used a blue, black and silver and I think it turned out amazing!  And even my husband, who couldn't care less about nail polish, thought they were awesome!  Here's how I did it.

I started out by painting my nails with a base coat.  I used Orly's Bonder, which is something new that I'm trying out.

Bonder by Orly
Next, I painted my nails two coats of Blanc from Essie.  This acts as a background for the nail art and helps the design to stand out more.

Essie in Blanc
Then I poured some room temperature bottled water into a disposable cup (because the nail polish will ruin the cup).  I then dropped in one drop of blue polish, black polish, and silver polish.  Then I dropped in another drop of each, in that order.  Next, I took a toothpick and made a design in the polish.  This is what it looks like.
Marbled design in water
The shades I used were Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Blue Me Away, Wet N Wild Wild Shine in Black Creme, and Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Celeb City.

My polish picks
After I cleaned up my nails, this is what I ended up with.  Doesn't it look amazing?  I think I'm going to do this with my school colors for the first week with my students.  They'll be mesmerized!
