Target/CVS Haul

I recently went to Target and CVS and found some fun stuff!  And some of it was a great deal!  Here's what I picked up.

I bought the basket you see to hold the makeup I plan to wear for that day.  It was around $10 at Target.

I also needed some lip balm with SPF, as I just realized I finished my only lip balm with SPF.  I stocked up on some Soft Lips Vanilla (SPF 20) and Soft Lips Pearl (SPF 15), as well as some Blistex Five Star Lip Protection (SPF 30).  Now I'm stocked up for summer!

Another SPF friendly product I picked up is the Physician's Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50 Pressed Powder in Translucent Light.  Now this was my deal of the day, purchased at CVS.  This is normally $14.99 at CVS.  I got $6 off for having a CVS card and it came with a free Physician's Formula Healthy Wear SPF 50 Bronzer in Light!!  That's about $30 worth of makeup for less than $9!  I was pretty pumped!!  I really wanted something with high SPF for my face.

From CVS I also purchased Jergens Natural Glow Express Body Moisturizer for Fair to Medium Skin Tones, around $8.99.  My husband and I are going on vacation to celebrate our five year wedding anniversary next month.  We will go to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland and I didn't want to take my pasty pale legs with me.  Usually when I want some color on my legs, I've been enjoying my Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs but that seemed like a lot of work for every day wear.  We'll see how the self-tanner goes.  Usually it just turns my legs orange.

Next I purchased some Ardell Lashes in #305 Black.  They ran around $5 and can also be purchased at most Walgreens, Target, or Walmart.

And lastly, I finally picked up the Wet N Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Palette in Vanity.  I really wanted to pick up some more matte shades and I've heard so many great things about these palettes but had never tried them myself.  I quite like the matte side!  This ran around $5, which I felt was a bit much but I guess it is six shades of eyeshadow.

Target Organization Ideas

Lately, I've been on a real organization kick, especially when it comes to my makeup and it seems like a lot of others out there have the same struggle.  I thought I would share some ideas I had with you.  I was at Target the other day, looking for a basket, and I saw some cool items that would make great makeup organizers for a decent price.  Sorry the pictures are so small, but I took them with my cheapo cell phone!

This is a small counter top makeup organizer.  It is clear acrylic, sold in the bathroom organization section of Target.  As you see, the price when I took this photo was $8.09.

This is a tiny (see compared to my hand) set of 3 clear acrylic drawers, also sold in the bathroom storage section, for $8.99.

This set of three shelves is my favorite.  The small black shelves are removable and  have slats for items to dry if necessary.  It also has a handle at the top.  Also sold in bathroom storage area for $11.69.

Just some fun out of the box makeup storage ideas for you!!

Eyeshadow Love

I feel so blessed as a woman to gain so much happiness from something as simple as makeup.  So here is an eyeshadow I recently fell in love with because it makes me happy!!

It is this beautiful shimmery lavendar-silver shade and the even better news is that it only costs $1 for the palette!!  It's the L.A. Colors Palette in Glamorous.  I purchased this palette at Dollar Tree and it's not only inexpensive, but also cruelty-free!

Below you will see a few close up photos of the palette and the particular shade I'm really crazy about right now.

The shade I'm talking about is in the top left corner.

Another shot of the entire palette.
There are lots of lovely shades in this palette, but when I used this particular shade (top left corner) this morning as my lid shade, I just fell in love with its shimmeriness.  It is such a perfect mix of silver and lavendar and it's rather different from anything else in my collection.

Close up of the shade.
Below I've taken several different pictures of the swatches (both without and with primer) on my hand.  I tried to capture the shadow in several different lights so you could see how it looks in different lighting scenarios.  It really catches the light nicely.  The primer I used in all photos was Too Faced Shadow Insurance.

For the look I did today (not pictured), I placed this shade on the lid, a deep shimmery brown in the crease, and the white shade in the palette as a highlight.  I love the way it turned out.

My First False Eyelashes

I have always wanted to try false eyelashes but I always thought since my eyelashes are naturally long anyway, it wouldn't make much of a difference.  And to be honest, even as a "makeup guru" I thought there would be no way I had the skill to actually get them to look good.  Then one of my friends told me that she had tried it and it was really not much harder than putting on eyeliner.  As I can totally handle eyeliner, I thought I would finally give it a try, at least to make my lashes look thicker, if not longer.  I had a fun occassion that would be suitable for a natural set (my best friend's son's second birthday party) so I bought some lash glue and a couple of sets of natural lashes.

I decided to use the pair on the right, which are the Andrea Accents Human Hair Lashes in #301 Black.  They are basically a half strip that is longer on the outer edge and tapers down to a shorter length on the inside.  I thought they would just give me a nice curled thick look on the outer corner.  I am in love!!!  I ended up going to Sally Beauty Supply after the party and getting several more sets of lashes, including a few more pairs of the Andrea #301 and a pair of Andrea #53, which is a full strip of natural lashes.  The Revlon ones you see in this photo are called "Flirty".

It took me several tries to get them to stick on and get them placed exactly how I wanted them, but it wasn't hard at all and at the end of the night, they came right off after soaking some eyemakeup remover over them.  Here's the picture of me with the lashes on.  Like I said, they aren't super dramatic, but I think they look really pretty!

Adult Braces: More Strength

This quote sums up everything I think about beauty.  It is giving me more strength in my tribulations as a braces-wearing, tooth-missing adult.

"To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don’t need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself." — Thich Nhat Hanh

Adult Braces: Plucking Her Petals

"By plucking her petals, you do not gather the beauty of the flower." - Rabindrath Tagore

When I began this journey as an adult braces wearer, I looked at it as an opportunity to fix my smile (no matter how late in life) and I've thus far been very optimistic about the braces.  That said, this week has been hard, to say the least.

As many of you may already know, I recently had oral surgery to remove my wisdom teeth, as well as my two primary canine teeth.  So now I'm missing two of my front teeth.  I missed all of work last week and one day this week due to the surgery.  When I came back to work (I teach 5th grade in a not-so-large elementary school), I had no idea that while I was gone apparently the school was abuzz with gossip-news of my missing teeth.

After maybe the third time I was accosted by a co-worker that I'd rarely, if ever, spoken to, as they stood offensively close to me, making small talk, while staring blatantly at my teeth, I realized that I was now the center of a sort of small town gossip.  My school is not large.  We employ about 45 teachers and a handful of other staff.  But everyone knows everyone and apparently, everyone knows everyone's business.  The sad thing is, even my students have not behaved so abhorrently.  They have been far more mature and understanding about the whole experience.  To see adults behave so rudely is simply disgusting.

At first, my natural reaction was to be just as rude and horrible back but let's be honest, character is about doing what is right all the time, not just when it is easy.  Since two wrongs do not make a right, I have decided that rather than behaving gracelessly, like all the other adults, I will turn my cheek, hold my head high and realize that Eleanor Roosevelt was wise beyond her time.  "No one can make you feel inferior without your consent."

And here's the thing: I've never really been insecure about myself until now.  But don't be misled, I was not the beautiful child or the teenage girl that all the boys wanted to be with, but I was thin enough and kind of cute and that was always good enough for me.  Later, I was lucky enough to have met and dated my husband at the adolescent age of sixteen and he lovingly provided me with strength and confidence that many girls did not, and still do not have.  I have always been independent and never cared much what others thought of my looks, brains, or personality.  So for the first time in my life, I really feel insecure.  People are staring at me.  People are talking about me, whispering behind my back.  How do I handle this????

After much thought, my decision is this: I don't.  It's that simple.  I never cared before what people thought, so why should I now?  I am who I am and if someone doesn't like it, so what?  They probably don't like themself very much either.  So I will let them talk and stare and whisper and I will respond with grace and kindness for their ignorance.  I am guided now by this quote I found.

"By plucking her petals, you do not gather the beauty of the flower."  -Rabindrath Tagore

To me it means this: they may pluck at me with their insults and their whispers and their stares, but they will not affect me and they will remain as ugly inside as ever.  But I will stand strong and tall, I will hold my head high, and I will be as beautiful as ever both inside and out, because it is character that forms true beauty; not makeup, or hair, or even... teeth.

Blush Reorganization!

As I was about dying of boredom from being cooped up in the house for the past week, confined to my couch, I decided last night I was going to muster up the strength to go and "play" (as I call it) with my makeup.  As I was looking through my collection, swatching, trying different combinations, and all those things we makeup addicts like to do, I found two products that I love that I had completely forgotten about!  That's when I realized that my makeup organization needs a serious makeover.  As I looked through drawers crammed full of eyeliner, lipglosses, and blushes, I became determined that my project for next weekend would be to reorganize!  But as I am the world's most impatient woman, I was now determined to start today.  I watched some makeup organization videos on YouTube and stumbled across this one from EnKoreMakeup (who is wonderful!) on DIY blush organization.  Right up my alley!  I tried it out exactly as EnKore laid out in the video and it worked perfectly so then I used the same idea and altered the sizes a little bit to fit my e.l.f. Studio Blushes.  I am hoping it will be more user-friendly and easier to access the things I want.  I think it looks great!  What do you think??
